Chapter Four:
The Beginning of (The End)

This cannot be happening.

"Maya? What's happening? Who was that?" Farkle said, bringing her out of her thoughts.

"That was Lucas ..."

"You haven't told him yet, have you?"

"I have to go Farkle.. I'll talk to you soon. Uh- thank you, for being my bestrfriend." She said and in return, he smiled sadly before she shut the laptop and ran out of the room to find Riley and Lucas talking.

"Lucas she was going to tell you-" she heard Riley say.

"When? When was she gonna tell me?" He yelled. He had more rage in his voice than she'd ever heard before. It was like he was placing all the blame on her for it.

"Look, I thought she already had, okay?"

He took a long, deep breath and ran his hands over his face and through his short hair.

"Is she gonna get rid of it?" He asked softer this time.

"Nobody said anything about abortion," Maya spoke firmly, walking into the kitchen where her boyfriend and her best friend stood.

"I'll leave you two to talk," Riley muttered, walking away as Lucas walked closer up to her.

Rather than speaking, he just stood there, staring. She couldn't help but feel anxious, like he was going to turn into Texas Lucas again.

But Lucas, he was feeling every emotion in the book at that moment: anger, sadness, confusion; he had it all.

"How long have you known?" He finally spoke out, calmly but insistently.

"Maybe, about week or two. I'm only eight weeks along, since that's when we ... ya' know. And- Riley was the first to find out but I didn't mean to- and she made me tell Farkle. I wanted to tell you, Luke, I did but I couldnt. I was scared and it never felt like the right time."

"Don't give me that, Maya. You know, you could have told me. I mean, is it really even mine?"

"Of course it's yours, Lucas! You've all asked me that like I'm some kind of slut or something and I'm not!" She was furious at this point; furious at him, at herself. It was getting to be too much and she could feel the frustration building up inside her like the only thing she could do to get it out was to scream.

"Well, are you gonna get rid of it or what are you doing?"

"This isn't a fucking cold, Lucas! It's a baby! You can't just 'get rid of it,' there's abortion or adoption, and I am not going to kill our own child. I can't even believe you would think of that!"

Who was he to tell me to practically kill my own baby? Our baby.

"I'm just saying, Maya, we have options! Consider them."

"'Options,' huh? How about the option of keeping him- or her. How about the option of growing up, and raising our baby, together. How about the option of being a family, Lucas? Did you ever, for a second, stop to consider that option?"

He stood there with his hands on his hips, staring down at the floor, avoiding her guilt-worthy stare at him. Of course, he'd considered it but he couldn't tell her that. He couldn't handle it; he didn't want to be like his own father and to raise a child at eighteen seemed like the one way to actually become him.

"Maybe you should just go." She sighed, turning away from his face.

"You're not seriously asking me to leave." He stated with a questioning remark in his voice as he spoke. She turned around with a near-sighted tear close to dropping.

"No, I'm not, Luke. I'm telling you to. Please just go, you clearly don't want to be here, and I don't want to make you. So just-" She gestured to the door.

Lucas stormed out of the apartment without a second thought as Maya collapsed on the floor, head in hands, tears streaming down her face. Riley ran out into the living room when she heard the door slam and sighted Maya sobbing. She held her in her arms and did her best to assure her it would be okay although she wasn't even sure herself. Even though Maya was heartbroken she wouldn't have her boyfriend by her side through it all, she knew she would still have Riley.

And that had to be enough.
