Chapter Fourteen:
Your Daddy Doesn't Like MeFifteen Weeks Pregnant
Its been three weeks since I walked out on Lucas at the cafe; I haven't talked to him ever since.
There's just so much going on.
Especially with Josh, ever since I went to that cafe with Lucas, instead of having breakfast with Josh, he's been avoiding me. I just dont get it, we were having so much fun together, we were finally close again and he just completely shuts me out, pushes me away and for what?
I thought about getting him alone so I could talk to him but every time I try, he comes up with some kind of lame excuse to leave.I was sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for Riley, when she ran out.
"HeyPeachessosorrybutihavetogo!Raincheck!" She said as fast as she could as she rushed to kiss my forehead, grab her coat and run out the door.
"Wha-"
Before I could finish a word, she slammed the door behind her and Josh walked out of the hallway; I looked down at my cup."Where'd Riley go?"
"What scared to be alone with me now?" I mumbled.
"Alone? With you?" He scoffed, "Actually, you know what, I just remembered that– I have an early class today," He excused as he walked towards the door.
"Prove it," I faced him before he got the chance to walk out and he turned around with a confused expression.
"Prove that you can be alone with me," I exclaimed, "This weekend. We could both use a getaway, so, why not together?"
"Maya ... I dont think that now is exactly the best time for you to be leaving your family–"
"No! Now couldn't be a more perfect time! Oh and look," I looked down at my wrist as if there were a watch there, "Its Thursday; you have until tomorrow afternoon to prepare. So pick me up at five."
I smirked and he let out a scoff and shook it off with a laugh as he walked out the door.
Friday 4:45 p.m.
"Hey mom!" I yelled as I threw a shirt in my bag and walked quickly out of my room. "Where's my teddy velvet lipstick–" I froze in my footsteps as I saw him talking standing beside her.
They both looked at me, one with a look full of sympathy and one with a look of worry."Hi Maya..." He said slow and quiet.
And just then, as I uttered the words "Hi dad," the door of my apartment opened up and Josh walked in with chipper.
"Hey Maya! I'm here, I'm early, and I'm ready for our getaway!"
He looked at the three of us standing awkwardly uncomfortable and quiet.
"Hey miss Hart," He smiled softly as he gave her a hug and handed her a bouquet of red roses.
"Thanks Josh. You've always been such a gentleman," She smiled.
"Hey, Maya," He placed his hand on my back and planted a kiss on my forehead.
She put the bouquet in a vase and set them on the table as we stood silent. When she walked back, he finally got the courage to speak. As if her being near him meant he was safer."Kermit," He pulled his hand out of his pocket and shook Josh's firmly, "I'm Maya's father," And the expression on Josh's face jumped as he turned towards me, speechless.
"This is Josh," I informed him since I knew he was too shocked to speak for himself at the moment.
"Okay, Josh," he mocked. "who are you? What business do you have with my daughter?" He questioned as if he was actually a part of my life.
"Not yours!" I jerked at the same time as my mom scolded "Kermit."
"You havent been around for as long as I can remember so don't go acting like you can just come back and play the father role now! I don't need you. Come on Josh," I let out annoyed as I grabbed his wrist and pulled him back to my room; I could hear them arguing just like they had done when I was a little kid.
"What is your dad doing here?" He questioned as he sat on my bed and watched me hastily stuff things in my bag.
"I dont know. And I dont intend on sticking around to find out either."
I tensely zipped up my bag and walked out of the room with Josh trailing behind me like a lost puppy.
I walked over to my mom who was sitting on the couch with her head in her hands like she was about to explode and Kermit out of sight— shocker. I set my bag leaning against the couch and sat down beside her."Are you gonna be okay, mom? No, you know what, Josh and I can go next weekend. I'm staying here with you. Sorry, Josh."
"No, no, I'll be fine. Go have fun sweetheart." She tried to assure me with a warm smile on her face.
He walked back into the livingroom and we all moved our eyes to him.
"You aren't actually gonna trust our seventeen year old daughter and some nineteen year old guy to be alone together all weekend, are you?"
I kissed my mothers cheek and stood up, giving him a look of pure despise before a small smirk and said "Can't get pregnant twice," and walked out the door before he could even have a reaction.
I waited in the hallway for Josh and when he finally came out, he handed me my bag and we both laughed. Then he called me a bitch, which I only chuckled at and thanked him for.I felt bad for leaving her alone with the man who walked out on us but I knew she needed closure and she wasn't going to get that with me around. We walked out of the apartment complex and over to his truck in preparation for our weekened alone together.
As I slung my bag in the back and then hopped into the small, three seater, beat up of a truck, I let out the first few words of our getaway.
"So! First stop–"
"No. Nuh-uh. Don't even finish that sentence," he rejected. "I'm proving to you, remember? This weekend is on me. So fasten your seatbelt Maya Hart, cause it could get ugly."
With that we both left the parking lot in motions of laughter; the perfect start to the perfect weekend.
