I’m up early and at the gym, I’m so pissed off and full of rage. I am swinging at the boxing bag, going hard out, putting everything I have into each hit. The sweat trickles down from my neck and my shirt is damp, I take it off only wearing a sports bra and crop top. There is only other person here at 4:30am and it’s none other than Lonsdale.
“Well, someone pissed you off didn’t they?” I ignore her and keep going hard at the bag. “Who was it? Was it Daniel?” I still don’t acknowledge her presence “no, it can’t have been Daniel; was it Nick?” I stop punching for a second reminding myself of what he did. Then I took another swing at the bag and the hook broke. “Nick it is. What did he do? Wait I can probably guess,”
“What do you want Lonsdale?”
“It’s Sarah actually” I look at her with the dirtiest look, hoping it would give her a hint into how little I care, “but Lonsdale’s nice, I can roll with that.”
“This is the last time I will repeat myself, what do you want?”
“Nothing, you just looked really stupid with the intense face you get, beating the crap out of a bag. Also, what did Nick do?” she asked, it was almost like she was determined, a life or death situation.
“What do you mean what did Nick do?”
“After you left he came back inside all intense and told us to leave; now that I think about it, the question is more like, what did you do to Nick?” On that note, I see Daniel all in his cheery self and Nick shaking his head at his unusual best friend.
The two boys walk up to us I don’t take my eyes off Nick; Daniel seeing my exposed stomach “Holy crap, America’s got abs.”
“So are you two finally getting along?” Nick asks us.
“Yeah, we are totally like best friends now.” Lonsdale replies trying her best American accent and rolls her eyes at him before walking away. As she does she takes Daniel by the collar dragging him away to the weights room giving us a small amount of privacy.
“Hey,” he says looking at me, he reaches for my hand but I jerk it away before it gets there. His brows furrow and he looks at me questioningly. “What’s wrong?” I ignore his question and walk away, getting in the boxing ring and taking my towel from the ropes and drying my face and abdomen. “Are you not going to answer me?” he asks, his voice remaining still and calm.
“Last night didn’t happen okay,” I didn’t know what to say, I felt a pull towards him, unsure of what it was.
“What?” he climbed into the ring standing opposite me. “What do you mean last night didn’t happen? You kissed me back.” Although he stayed calm, I could hear the hurt in his voice.
“I know,” I lift my head from looking at the ground to look at him “it was a mistake.”
His head shot down to look at his feet and his shoulders slumped over in defeat. “I..I” he was cut short by the sound of my phone ringing. I turned my back to him answering the call. It was Mr Taylor. “Hello?” I answer.
“Hi Cally, it’s Mr Taylor, Nick left his phone at home and your number was in it and I assumed he would be with you, so can you tell him to come out and get it please, tell him I’m in the car.”
“Okay, be there in a sec.” I hung up the phone and put it back down in my bag. “That was your dad, he’s at the car, you left your phone at home he has it with him or something.”
“No!” he yells and runs his hands through his hair.
“No what?” I could see the anxiety build up on his face.
“That’s our code word; They must have him, I knew this was going to happen, I’m not ready for them yet.” He exclaimed. Maybe this has something to do with the Phoenix.
“Not ready for who Nick?”
He brushes what I ask off and pushes past me. “No!” I yell and swing out my leg kicking him in the side. “What are you talking about? Does it have to do with the Phoenix? Have they come looking for it?”
“The Phoenix? What are you talking about?” he looked confused.
“The Phoenix Nick, it is in your fathers possession, I need to know, where is it?”
“No Cally wait...”
“If you want me to help your dad, I can help, but you need to tell me, questions can be asked later”
“Cally I...”
“I don’t want to hear your life’s story, where is it?”
“Cally!” he yells, which brings me to silence. “I think you’re misunderstanding; I AM PHOENIX!”
