Taylor stood by the kitchen as he listened to the conversation between his mother and Carmen, unable to do anything but listen.
"What do you mean?" he heard Carmen ask. His mother's laughter soon followed.
"Don't play dumb with me. Why did you seduce my son? What did you want─to ruin his future or did you want money?"
"I don't know what you're talking ab─"
Before Carmen could finish what she was saying, Taylor heard a loud sound and took several steps forward to see Carmen holding her cheek while her eyes were teary. He felt his hand ball into a fist as he tried to control his anger and stay out of sight.
"Now I don't know what you have planned but whatever it is, I want you to stop. I don't care how you do it but I want you out of Taylor's life─FOR GOOD. UNDERSTAND?"
When he saw his mother walk out of the kitchen, he took a step forward and blocked her path. She looked at him, initially surprised before she smiled slightly.
"Did you need something Taylor?" she asked. He wanted nothing but to show her his anger but he restrained himself.
"I need to talk to you," was all he said before he walked further from the kitchen and towards the door which led to the backyard. His mother followed his actions.
"Why did you do that mom?" he asked, confronting his mother once they were out of sight from the others.
"I don't know what you're t─"
"Don't even try that with me right now," he replied, trying so desperately to hold in his anger since it was his mother.
"Taylor I did what was best for you."
He laughed mirthlessly at her words.
"'What was best'? You slapped a pregnant woman! And not just any woman; the one carrying my baby─your grandchild for crying out loud!"
"Don't raise your voice at me. And don't you ever call that child my grandchild; I will not have a grandchild that was born out wedlock," his mother stated sternly. And at that moment, Taylor could not describe how disappointed and ashamed he was of his mother.
"How can you say that about an unborn child?" he managed to asked.
"It's because I care about you and your future, that's how. I know the difficulty that comes with having a child and I don't want you to make big sacrifices just for one mistake. You need to stop seeing that girl and I don't care how you do it."
He looked at his mother, unable to react. Part of him understood what she was saying but a bigger part of him disagreed with her. He couldn't just get a girl pregnant and ignore her as if he hadn't done anything.
"Now if we're done talking, then I'll leave."
He watched his mother as she walked away from him, unsure of what he was feeling. But shortly after, he remembered what had happened in the kitchen and started to look for Carmen.

"So this is where you've been hiding," Taylor said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood once he saw her crying. He saw Carmen attempting to smile but she began to cry even more, causing him to feel at fault for her pain.
She placed her head on her knees and continued to cry. Seeing her like that, he sat down on the floor beside her and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her towards him. She looked up at him caught off guard.
"What are you doing?" she asked through the tears.
"Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to comfort you," he replied, smiling slightly. Reluctantly, she placed her head on his shoulder.
"Are you done crying?" he asked after several moments of silence. She tried to take her head off his shoulder but he forced her to keep it there. And he didn't miss the small smile on her face after he did that.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cry," was all she said.
"I saw what happened in the kitchen and I'm the one that should be sorry. My mom shouldn't have done that."
She shook her head, causing him to wonder what she was thinking but he didn't ask. Instead, he made her an offer.
"Why don't we get out of here?"
Carmen looked at him in confusion as he stood up and dragged her with him towards the door. He asked her to put on her coat and shoes as he did the same before they walked out towards his car.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"You'll see when we get there," he replied, winking at her to which she laughed.
And as he stood there, watching her laugh, he couldn't describe the wonderful feeling which passed through him, knowing that he had made her laugh.
