It had been a few days since Carmen had spoken with her mom about the pregnancy. And although she felt confident enough to go through with it, her mother's doubts were beginning to get to her.
She had decided to stay in her room for the rest of the break, only leaving when it was necessary. And sometimes, her mother would knock on her door, attempting to get through to her but she wouldn't open. Instead, she would do everything she could to avoid her.
And now the day to leave had finally arrived.
As she stood before her mirror, she tried to think of how she would leave the house without speaking to her mother. Perhaps, she could wait for her to leave for work? She quickly shook her head at that thought; her mother would not be leaving any time soon since she had a night shift at the hospital.
She sighed and allowed herself to fall onto her bed. But as soon as she did, she heard her ringtone and quickly went to answer her phone.
"Hello?" she asked.
"I'm outside your house," she heard Taylor say. And immediately, she stood up from her bed.
"Should I come and help you with your luggage─"
"NO!" she quickly cut him off, feeling her heart begin to race. The last thing she needed was for him to meet her mother after the way she had reacted upon hearing the news.
"Is everything alright Carmen?" Taylor asked, his tone filled with concern.
"Uh yeah..." she trailed off, trying to think of an excuse, "I just didn't want you to walk out when it's snowing so badly. I heard it's pretty cold."
The line was silent for a few moments, causing her to wonder whether or not he had believed her.
"Okay," was all he said after a few moments of silence. She mentally sighed in relief.
"I'll be out in a few minutes," she told him before hanging up.
With thoughts of having to face her mom out of her mind, she quickly walked about her room, throwing last minute items into her suitcase before picking up her jacket once she was ready. She struggled to pull her bag down the stairs until her mother rushed to her and offered help.
"Thanks," Carmen mumbled to her mother. Her mother didn't say anything as she watched her walk towards the door and put on her shoes and jacket.
"I hope you're not planning to push me out of this situation. You know, I'm here to help you," her mother told her.
She didn't say anything to her mother's words before opening the door and stepping outside to find that it wasn't snowing at all. She desperately hoped that Taylor would not ask her why she had made excuses.
"I guess I'll see you on your next break," she heard her mother say before the door closed. She heaved a heavy sigh before walking down the sidewalk towards Taylor's car. And before she could get too close, he opened the door and began to walk towards her.
"You know, you're really bad at lying," Taylor told her as he reached for her bag. She didn't say anything and just allowed him to help her while she walked to the passesnger's side of the car. She opened the door and took a seat, putting on her seatbelt immediately.
After he had placed her suitcase in the trunk, he returned to the driver's seat and put on his seatbelt before turning to her.
"Is everything alright Carmen? You're acting a little odd," he said. She turned towards him with a small smile and shook her head.
"Yeah."
He continued to look at her, obviously unsatisfied, before he sighed.
"If this is about my mom, I'm very sorry. I didn't mean for anything to happen to you at our house."
Her eyes stung slightly as she was reminded of what had happened. But she quickly blinked away the tears and replied, attempting to comfort him.
"You don't need to worry about that Taylor."

They had been driving towards the school in silence when the sound of Taylor's ringtone filled the small space. He looked away from the road towards his phone for a second before addressing Carmen, returning his eyes to the windshield.
"Do you mind reading that text to me?" he asked her. She nodded and reached for his phone.
"I can't see the full message. What's your passcode?" she asked after she had turned the screen on.
"0-1-6-1."
She navigated to the messaging app and opened his newest message, doing her best not to look at his other conversations.
"Thank you for informing us of your move. As the demand for dormitory rooms is high, we request that you remove your belongings within twenty-four to thirty-six hours."
And as soon as he heard that, he swerved the car off the road and slammed the breaks.
