The next morning bright and early Sam, Dean, and myself packed our bags and said good-bye to Bobby. After spending two weeks there it kinda felt like leaving home, but I knew we would be returning here sometime. This definitely wasn't the last I would see of Bobby.
"Watch out for those two idjits." he told me with a hug. I laughed and said that I would. As we drove away from the house I felt bad that Bobby was there all alone but didn't mention this to the guys. We rode on for about an hour with the music playing quietly in the background. I sat in the backseat doodling and not saying much. Finally my troublesome curiosity got my attention.
"Hey guys I have a question."I said
"Shoot," replied Sam.
"First, where are we going exactly? I know it's in Colorado but where?" I asked, "And second, what are we hunting?"
"Ouray, Colorado," said Sam, "and we're hunting a Rawhead." I shot my uncle the funniest look, and started laughing.
"Come on seriously, what are we hunting?" I said once I was done.
"A rawhead," said Sam again. I could tell that he really did mean it.
"Well then whats that?" I asked.
"Its like a type of bogeyman that eats kids," said Dean.
"How do you know its a rawhead?"
"About 7 kids have gone missing in the last 3 months. Only one body was found, and it was washed up on the shore of the river." said Sam handing me a printed off news article. The title saying: ONE OF SEVEN FOUND ON RIVER BANK. I skimmed the article and saw a picture of the kid that was found. A small boy, about 10 with freckles and an impish grin.
"They usually live by water and their key sign is drowning children who are bad." Sam explained. I nodded in understanding.
"How do you kill one?"
"Electrocuting it." said Dean," Just don't stand in water when you do it." Sam laughed slightly remembering there last run in with a rawhead, when Dean had nearly died.
"What's funny?"
"Not really anything, its just Dean here doesn't have a good history with these things." said Sam. I raised an eyebrow but said no more. We drove for hours and didn't speak much. I continued to read the book Bobby had given me. There was so much information, it was hard to take in all at once. After a while I had to put the book down, and watched the land fly by as the impala rode on. Slowly I felt myself sinking into sleep, which I was thankful to get. I found myself quickly wrapped up in dream which actually was more like a memory.
It was back on my 16th birthday, mere months ago. On my birthdays Mom would always let me stay home. She would take the day off and we'd do whatever it was we wanted. This year I had wanted to go to the aquarium, that way it was a treat for both of us. Before this however, we went straight to the DMV so I could get my license, I was 16 after all. I passed with ease and was allowed to drive us to the aquarium. When we got there I wasn't sure who was more happy, her or me.
We took our time and saw everything there was to see. The big glass tunnel that went under the tanks was our favorite part. It was so much fun! Best birthday ever! Or so I though before we had returned home. It was late when we had arrived back home. No light was on, not even the usual lamp we leave on when we go somewhere. As we walked up the front steps and unlocked the door I got a funny feeling but ignored it.
As soon as my body was through the front door the lights came on and people jumped out of nowhere screaming "SURPRISE!!!!!!" I was stunned, my feet rooted to the floor and the only thing I could manage to do was smile like an idiot. My mom and friends had set up this surprise party for me. It was so amazing, even my friends who had moved away had flown out for the occasion. I had always been fortunate to have a big group of friends but there were only about five that I considered my best friends.
"Happy birthday you spaz-tastic child," my friend Rose said wrapping me in a hug. It was so good to see her, since she had moved when we were in eighth grade.
It was so amazing and I had a great time. We laughed and ate and did the worst round of karaoke I had heard in my life, but I savored every minute of it. After opening up my presents Mom said there was one last thing. My friends all grinned deviously with knowledge I didn't have. I was blind folded and led outside. When the blind fold was removed and I opened my eyes, there was my car!
Best birthday ever! I instantly went over the entire thing and on the back I found a bumper sticker that read "My real car is a '67 Impala". That made me smile.
"Hey Rache, we are are going driving bright and early tomorrow!" said Amelia, my best friend since I was 3. This had to be one of my favorite memories of all time. It was so full of joy and happiness I never imagined it would stop. I lingered in my dream, retracing old faces, and voices. It made me sad, but the memory overpowered it. I heard a distant sound, voices, not ones from this memory, but cold dark voices. The scenes inside my mind switched to a dark room, a chair with coils of ropes near the feet.
A man came into view carrying something I couldn't move from where I was standing. He set whatever it was down in the chair, then I saw it. The familiar hair, the shirt, the boots, it was me. I felt my blood run cold and I tried to wake up but felt as if I were trapped here in my own head.
"Wake up!" I said to myself, "Come on wake up!" I pinched myself, nothing happened. Then I saw a flash and time seemed to have changed, and I saw myself beginning to wake up, calling out for help, then seeing Lily and realization flash in my eyes. I saw the struggle to fight and the hope and every single emotion flash through my face. I tried to move but couldn't and watched myself be tortured by Lily, each action sent a searing sensation through me and the places upon my skin that were being damaged glowed red upon me.
I heard voices again, distant but firm. Calling out to me and I felt myself shaking, or was that someone else's doing?
"Rachel?!" I heard the voice say, it began to become recognizable. "RACHEL?!" It repeated. My eyes snapped open and I was in the back seat of the Impala once again. The car had pulled off to the side of the road. Sam was turned around in his seat and Dean had actually gotten out of the car and was kneeling next to me.
"Are you okay?" asked Dean seriously. I nodded slowly.
"Yeah just a nightmare...I'm okay." but to be honest I really wasn't and I think they both knew that.
"Come on, lets go walk," said Dean standing up and helping me out of the car,"It will make you feel better." I nodded and stepped out into the cool night air, there were lots of trees around us. We must be in Colorado now. I thought silently. Dean and I walked for a ways not saying anything then turned back around. He was right it did make me feel better, my head was clearer when we returned. He told me that sometimes it just helps to get some fresh air inside when you're on the road, and I agreed with him. Sam was sitting on the back of the Impala when we returned.
"You alright?" he asked us both, we nodded yes. After siting out in the open air for a while, we got back in the car and found a motel, the guys both crashed but not me, I wouldn't be able to sleep again for the night.
