Because of the stop last night we had to pick up again in the morning to get to Ouray. When we arrived it was raining and needed to start this job. Once we got a hotel room, Dean and Sam both agreed that I should stay in the room. Of course this didn't go so well....
"Why do I have to stay!" I argued, "I could go and talk to civilians!"
"No," said Dean firmly, "Not after what happened last time."
"That wasn't until I went to the beach party!" I stated.
"Dean's right Rachel," said Sam agreeing with his brother, "And last time Cas was with you." I huffed with anger and frustration at the two men before me.
"Come on please!"
"No and I'm not changing my mind!" Dean said with a tone of voice letting me know there was no winning this argument.
"I can't believe this..."I muttered angrily as I flopped down on one of the beds. This wasn't fair! I wanted to help them with this one! How was I supposed to become a hunter (and not die) if I didn't get practice. Sure, I guess I saw the logic in Dean's refusal to let me come but still! What am I supposed to do until they come back?
"While your here do some more research on the kids," said Sam trying to lower my obvious attitude towards staying behind.
"But that's SO boring Sam!" I said looking over at him. They looked like FBI agents again.
"I know," he replied, "but anything helps." I grumbled under my breath and kicked on my laptop. I found the local newspaper and read the most recent up-date.
"Hey guys, this might be important." Dean and Sam both came over to see what I was looking at. The article was published yesterday, October 5th.
ANOTHER CHILD FOUND AND ANOTHER CHILD MISSING. IS THIS A SERIAL KILLER?
On the night of October 4th around the hour of 8 pm the body of 7 year old Mina Stone was found on the river bank, drowned and mutilated. Police have stated that they are doing everything they can to stop the kidnapper but efforts have been futile. Family of the missing children are praying for their safe return.
"We only want our little ones back," said Sierra Gonzalez, mother of missing 13 year old Eric Gonzalez. There will be a candle light vigil October 6th at the Ouray Hot Springs Park at 7 pm.
It was discovered the morning of October 5th that another child has been taken, 16 year old James Lewis was found missing in the early hours of the morning by his mother. With the sudden jump in ages of the serial kidnapper, all parents are warned by authorities to not leave your child unattended. Our thoughts and prayers go to the children and their families. May they return home soon.
I looked up at Dean and Sam waiting for them to say something. Both had their eye brows furrowed.
"So...whats the plan?" I ask finally.
"Dean, this thing could come after her here." said Sam seriously.
"Dammit," cursed Dean frustrated. He was quiet for a moment trying to think of what to do with this new information "Rachel go get dressed," he said taking off suit jacket. "We're going to do civilian work around town then go to that vigil tonight."
"You mean I get to come?" I said surprised by the turn of events. Dean nodded in response. I smiled and grabbed my clothes from my bag and headed to the bathroom. Half an hour later we were walking out the door to the Impala to head into town. The weather was starting to get cool so I had on my pair of mid-calf high boots, a pair of jeans with holes in them with black tights underneath, and a grey tank top covered by my Levi jacket. I had my hair curled down in ringlets.
It was decided that we would start in a diner since we needed breakfast too. As we entered a small cafe I saw a bulletin board with missing posters of the still missing kids. I saw the picture of James Lewis, the boy discovered yesterday. He was my age... if the Rawhead came after kids that have been bad was I a possible target? That was an unsettling thought, that was probably why I was brought along.
We were seated and gave our orders. While we waited Sam filled us in on the rest of the kidnapping reports and told me the story of Rawhead and Bloody Bones.
"Thats sick." I said when he was done, "So pretty much every kid in this town is at risk including me?" Sam nodded.
"Is there anyway to ward off the thing?"
"Not that we've heard of. Electrocuting it is the only way to kill it that we know of but other than that the best way to avoid getting taken is be good." Sam replied. I looked at my uncle then my dad. Well I might possibly be very screwed. After we ate we went around and talked to the families of the victims, they were agents and I was the assistant. The last home we went to was the one of the most recent kidnapping, this time I could be more of service. The plan was for me to go in first then have the guys come in later.
I knocked on the door remembering everything that Sam had told me. I was a friend of James' from summer camp. A woman opened the door, her strawberry blonde hair framing her puffy face, from crying. Time to work.
"Hello?" she said with a sniffle.
"Are you Mrs. Lewis?" I asked sadly. She nodded her head.
"Yes I am, what can I do for you honey?" She looked so sad, did I look that way when mom...
"I am so happy I found you," I said with a sad smile of relief, "I'm a friend of James." Mrs. Lewis began to cry and wiped her nose with a tissue.
"Your a friend of my baby boy?" She asked I nodded my head, "Come on in, its so cold out there." I followed her into the house. "How did you know James? He was home schooled."
"We met over the summer at camp," I said, "My name's Miranda. I heard that he was kidnapped and rushed down here." I started to fake cry, "I just can't believe he's missing!" That was it, I did it, after that Mrs. Lewis and I talked for a good twenty minutes then a knock came at the door.
"Hold on Miranda, let me go see who this is." She said and walked towards the main hall. "Hello?" she asked as she opened the door.
"Are you Mrs. Lewis?" said Dean. I had moved seats to a small recliner and listened in.
"I am." she said
"Mrs. Lewis, I'm Agent Clark this is Agent Jones," said Sam, "We've come to get your statement."
"But I already gave it to the police," she said confused.
"Its a follow up review," said Dean, "To get any details we may have missed."
"Ohh," she said, "Umm come right in." Mrs. Lewis led them into the living room where I was at. I stood up from my chair.
"Oh Miranda, I forgot for a moment you were here-"
"Its okay Mrs. Lewis I'll be on my way, I can tell this is important."
"No, please stay. Its been so lonely here with out any young faces, plus maybe you could help this gentlemen with information about James as well."
"Oh...umm okay then," I say sitting back down in my chair.
Dean and Sam questioned Mrs. Lewis for about and hour, occasionally asking me things which they knew I could answer. About half way through I asked Mrs. Lewis where the restroom was.
"Upstairs third door on the left." she said with a smile. As I made my way upstairs I quietly found James' room. To my frustration I found nothing useful, then I remembered that one of the legends said a Rawhead sometimes hides under sinks before snatching a kid. I went into the bathroom to look for signs of the Rawhead.
I shut the door behind me and started looking around. I pulled back the shower curtain and saw there was an open window without a screen, a possibly exit. I was looking in the closet that held multiple towels and wash cloths. I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end and slowly eased the hidden knife from my pocket.
I whipped around knife ready to strike. This huge, bulky, fur covered ,disgusting thing that stank of moss and algae stood behind me. It ripped the knife from my hands and I let out the loudest scream I could muster. Its grotesque hand-like limb covered my face and I saw black coming into the edge of my vision. I tried to scream one last time before I lost consciousness.
