I've always been fascinated by the thought of infinity, how things could have no end. When I was young, I always believed all things have to end-some people told me all good things, but I believed all things-so when the concept of infinity was taught to me, I could never understand it.
"But everything comes to an end," I'd argued with my math teacher. He looked so tired of me as he tried to explain it all again. In fact, he probably just wanted to throw me out of the class.
"Not all things, Brandon," He'd said to me. "Some things, such as numbers and lines, go on forever."
"But if it doesn't end, what's the point of learning and knowing about it?"
"How about you discuss this with someone else?" He'd told me, and I knew it was best to shut up.
And so I kept thinking about it. When I asked my parents, they told me true love is endless, and I gagged. I did think, though. If true love is endless, you'd never be able to stop and look back at what you've accomplished and smile at the amazing things the two of you did together.
"Lemniscate," Someone said to me. I looked up from my doodle and see a boy standing beside me and staring.
"What?"
"Lemniscate," He said again and pointed at the infinity symbol of drawn on my paper.
"What does lemoncrate mean?" I asked him.
"Lemniscate," He corrected. "It's the symbol you drew."
"Infinity?" He nodded. "Do you know a lot about it?"
With a shrug, he replied, "I know it exists and is a thing."
"I feel like it isn't. Not literally." He sat down beside me and asked why I thought that. "I don't know. I've just always believed all things come to an end."
"But not everything goes on forever. There's always something that goes forever. You think the universe just halts to a sudden stop?"
"Not exactly, but it's gotta end somewhere," I told him. "Maybe infinity is just a thing the human mind created. Like when they wish for something not to end, they just made the infinite thing."
He smiled at me. "I like how we've basically discussed one of the mysteries of the world, and I don't even know your name yet."
"Oh yeah, that's something," I laughed. "My name's Brandon."
"Well, Brandon, has anyone told you love is infinite?" He asked me. I cringed and nodded. "My name's Mat by the way."
"My parents once told me if you really truly love someone, it'll never end. Even when the two of you die," I explained to Mat. He was quiet for a bit, thinking about that.
"I don't think that's true." I nodded in agreement. "However, I think you can love someone so much it's infinite. Like when someone asks 'how much do you love me?' the answer is infinitely."
"It's still a hard thing to believe. That someone can love someone so much." He raised an eyebrow.
"Sounds like you're pretty inexperienced with the whole love thing."
"How'd we get from talking about infinity to love?" I questioned, making him laugh. "And no, I'm not. I've had exactly one boyfriend in the past."
"Boyfriend?"
"Yes, I'm gay. Problem?"
"Not at all. Back to the conversation, though," He said, "if there's no infinity, how would everything end?"
"They just... sort of disappear I guess. They slowly fade away and then they don't exist anymore."
"And how does one's love end?"
I thought for a second. "I guess in the same way you fall in love for someone. You slowly fall out of love with someone and then all at once."
"And if I told you that wouldn't happen if you were with me?" I was taken back and just gaped at him. "Sorry, I couldn't help it."
"No, it's okay. I was just a bit surprised. That was smooth as hell."
"Thanks," He smiled. "So?"
"So what?"
"I asked you a question. What if I told you that wouldn't happen if you were with me?"
"I don't think that's true."
"Is that a challenge?" Mat smirked, and I shrugged. "Well then. Don't just play hard to get. I know you want to find out if it's true or not."
"What? If infinity exists?"
"That too." He scooted closer to me, sitting right across from me with a smile. His knees touched mine. "Remember a bit ago when I told you that that was a lemniscate? Before we had the life-changing conversation?"
"Yeah. It's nice to talk about it with someone for once." He stood up in a crouched position so that his face was right in front of mine. "What're you doing?"
"Proving you wrong." He leaned closer to me, and I leaned away out of instinct.
"How so?" I've hit the back of the chair now.
"Showing you something can be infinite."
"Impossible." I felt his lips meet mine, and I could feel my heart beating in my ears. I didn't push him away, though.
"Impossible?" Mat smirked once he pulled away. I didn't answer. "I thought so. Is love infinite now?"
"I'm still unsure. Maybe if that happened more, I'll come up with a decision."
"Now that," He laughed, "That was fucking smooth."
I smiled as well. There's a little voice in my head, and I could hear it telling me I wanted him to be right. I wanted to have something infinite with him, and that couldn't happen if infinity doesn't exist.
