[i sincerely have no clue what happened in this oneshot. i was just bored on a car one day and wtf happened]
The stars were twinkling in the sky as I lay there, nothing but the sound of nature accompanying me. Occasionally, there would be a soft breeze, nothing too cold nor strong, that would rustle the grass around me. There's even a bug crawling on and around my body, as if I were dead.
I wanted to fall asleep under the stars like how characters would in books and movies, but it felt like every time I closed my eyes, he was there. Him in the room left a mess by who the cops had given up trying to catch, the bedsheets soaked with his blood and strewn all over him.
And, of course, the dead body.
Breakfast was all I wanted; I surely didn't want to find my best friend dead. His face when I saw him haunted me from when I was wandering aimlessly from room to room in our house to lying here now. His face was down, and I dared myself to flip him over. /It could be a prank/, I'd told myself. And so I did. I'd grabbed his limp shoulder and turned him over to be greeted with a horrible scene.
I stared at Preston's eyes but only for seconds. They were empty and blank and resembled the eyes of a fish. They were wide open, and his expression seemed shocked. He seemed paler than normal, like all the blood was drained from his face. I would've laughed at the thought of that if it weren't true.
I ran out of his bedroom and straight into the bathroom to hurl out what was the dinner we had yesterday. The smell and sight of him was too much, and I didn't think I could enter that room again if ever. I'd expected the corpse to get up and limp over and strangle me. Perhaps that feeling would be a lot less painful. Terrifying but better. He didn't; he just lay there on the bed.
I started crying again. My tears soaked the already damp ground beneath my head, and I wiped my cheeks, trying to get the tears to stop. It almost felt like they were freezing my face. I sat up, feeling my breath become faster and faster. What was a peaceful part of nature earlier was now a horrifying nightmare, and I started getting a claustrophobic feeling like the world was disappearing. The breeze from earlier had turned into a loud and strong wind as I thought of that day again, and I shivered, suddenly wishing I'd brought a jacket.
I stood up. If I didn't leave soon, I'd die out here. The temperature was way too cold, and I knew, despite my limited knowledge on bodies, that I couldn't last out here. I could barely feel the tips of my fingers, and my legs struggled to continue moving-curse my past self for wearing something so thin. I fell, partially due to the wind knocking over and partially due to tripping, and my knees scraped the dirt and rocks. I cringed at the red that it left behind as I got up again.
"Need any help? You seem to have gotten yourself in some mess," someone said. I froze in my position, too scared to turn around and look at the source of the voice I could recognize anywhere.
"N-n-no tha-a-anks," I replied with chattering teeth. "I think I'll be fine."
"And I think that's a lie." Something-or rather someone-wrapped their arms around me, and I immediately felt warmth. It felt too comfortable, and I wanted to stay in it forever. I slowly slid down to sitting again, ignoring the howling wind in my ears. When I looked up at the sky, it seemed like it was going to start raining soon.
I turned around now to look at what was on me and shrieked, knocking him off of me. I jumped up. I knew it was him, but I didn't expect his dead body to be covering me. I felt like crying again, and I backed away from the corpse, curious about it but not that curious. Preston's limp and what should be dead head jerked up, and he looked at me with a terrifying smile. "What's wrong, Rob? Been a while, huh?"
He laughed, and I ran away from him. I heard his voice following me, though, and the footsteps constantly getting closer and close behind me. I couldn't help but scream at the empty field, "Get away from me!"
Soon the field of grass turned into the forest I saw earlier. Still, I didn't stop running. I didn't want to encounter him again, once was enough.
"Rob? Are you alright?" This time, Preston's voice was different. It wasn't high-pitched and broken like that of a taunting demon that told me exactly whose fault it was that Preston was dead; it sounded like his normal voice. The voice I'd wished to hear for ages. It was hypnotizing, and I found my sprint slowing to a walk as I turned around. He was there.
Preston, looking like his normal self, walked up to me with his usual smile plastered on his face. I stared back at him, and I couldn't move away. "Rob! Why are you running away from me?"
"I saw something horrible."
"Well, don't be silly!" He laughed. "It's just me!"
I nodded, suddenly panting and out of breath from running. "Right. Just you."
"Y'know, I've missed you," he told me.
"I've missed you too."
"Do you want to come along as well?" Preston held out his hand, offering for me to take it. I didn't hesitate to reach out and grab it, and he pulled me into a hug. Preston whispered in my ear, "Good choice."
"Like I was gonna choose a different one," I scoffed. "Where are we going?"
"Somewhere better." I nodded, and he started skipping away, pulling me along as well. Not that I minded, of course.
"Oh yeah, Preston?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask a question?"
"That technically is a question, but sure you can ask another one." I laughed. He was still the same old Preston.
"I'm dead, aren't I?"
His smile slipped, but he didn't stop skipping. Preston slowly nodded. "You're okay with it?"
I shrugged. "How did I die?"
Preston abruptly stopped and turned to me, and his eyes turned blank. He said in a monotone voice, "A young man, presumably Terence Leteri, was found frozen in Lietaker Forest 3 weeks-as determined by forensic scientists-after his death. They agree that the body was not altered in any way, and there did not appear to be any physical wounds on the man. He is assumed to have frozen to death. See article A2 for my information."
I shook my head and mumbled, "Well, almost all of it right."
We continued skipping again.
