SUMMER'S POV
The next day I couldn't wait to get to school and see Ryan. Friday was the most amazing afternoon of my life! It's almost sad to think that, to him, it was probably just another day.
I woke up in an unusually good mood. Everybody in the house seemed to notice!
Humming as I walked downstairs to find my hot pink crop top, my brother stopped me.
"You're awful happy for a Monday morning?" he questioned with a knowing smile.
"I guess I just got a good nights sleep," I answered, smiling innocently.
"This wouldn't have to do with that boy, what's his name? Ryan. Would it?"
I felt the heat rising to my cheeks. "No.." I drew out as I continued on my way to the laundry room.
Finally, after searching the whole house, I found my shirt and put together my favorite outfit. I even added a bit of pink lipstick for good measure.
I ran downstairs grabbing an apple and giving both my mother and my father a kiss on the cheek as I left. As for Hunter, I settled for a high five. What can I say? When i'm in a good mood, I go all out!
I stuck my headphones in and put my country playlist on shuffle. Hey, I like country as much as the next girl, even if I am from the North! Anyways, I smiled like an idiot all the way to school!
I learned if you get to school early you get more time to socialize, so I usually got here ten minutes early to talk to Peyton and some of her friends. Today they were all gathered around her locker, talking about some Australian singer that I had never heard of.
"Hey, guys!" I greeted.
"Oh, hey, Summer! You look nice today!" Sophia, one of the sweetest girls i've ever met, complimented.
"Thanks! I guess I got a second wind!" We all giggled a little.
"Come on, girls. Let's go to the powder room," Peyton instructed. Yeah, she can be a bit prissy sometimes, but these girls followed her like lost puppies. I guess I can play along.
So we all headed to the bathroom. As soon as we got there all the girls pulled open their purses and began perfecting their already perfect make up.
"So what do you guys think about Alice and Jason?!" Alyssa started the gossip session that we all knew was coming.
"Oh my gosh. TOTES ADORBS!" Casey exclaimed.
"Really?! Jason and Crystal always flirt!! They're bound to happen soon!" Peyton pointed out.
"That's true! If only Crystal and Seth broke up!" Lacey agreed.
"What do you think, Summer?" Peyton asked. I was confused for a second, Peyton didn't usually ask my opinion on things such as gossip.
"I don't know. Gossip isn't really my thing. If you guys don't mind I think i'm going to see if I can find Ryan," I excused myself and exited the restroom.
The halls were packed, but I knew where to find Ryan. I scooted around girls gossiping and couples kissing in corners. I cringed when I took a short cut and found a couple half naked in an abandoned hallway. Finally getting to the right hallway, I found Ryan's locker untouched and deserted. That's odd. Ryan always gets here by the five minute bell.
I waited around until the last two minutes before running to my homeroom and almost losing to the bell. Peyton watched me as I crossed the room to my seat, giving me a worried look.
"Why so late?" she whispered as I passed.
"Not here," I answered quickly. She would know what I meant. Peyton gave me one last concerned look before turning her attention back to the front board.
My mind wandered all throughout class. Ryan had a history of missing days, so I guess this was just one of them. I couldn't help missing him though. I know I shouldn't, but I did.
"Maybe he's just late," I whispered trying to convince myself.
"What's that, Miss Wilson? Would you like to share it with the class?" My teacher asked obnoxiously.
"No, Sir." I kept my thoughts inside my head for the rest of the class.
By lunch, there was still no sign of Ryan. I tried to think of some of his friends I could ask, but then I realized I had never seen him talk to anyone else at school before. I looked all through the cafeteria, but by then it was obvious that he wasn't going to show. I just wished it wasn't true.
I went outside where we had sat the day before and at my lunch with nothing but the sounds of nature around me. I listened to the water of the river that ran a little ways behind the school. I've always loved being outside, just not doing sports or anything that required feet-eye coordination.
About halfway through lunch I was sitting still, leaning back on my hands, when a little red robin landed on the grass in front of me.
"Hey little guy," I said, even though I knew he, or she, couldn't understand me.
It chirped as I expected, but then it kinda went crazy. The Robin kept chirping louder and louder, and getting closer to me. It was beginning to interest me as of why the bird was acting so odd, but the i checked my watch and I was already late for my next class. Great. Just great little Robin.
~*~*~
Art was boring without Ryan. I just sat there drawing crudely in silence. I wish there was someway I could get in touch with Ryan to talk to him, but I had never gotten a phone number, much less an address.
My mind began to wander as to why he wasn't here today. He had left awful abruptly Friday, but I didn't know what caused it. Maybe he was just upset about his mom? But he seemed fine on the way back to my house. Maybe he had a terrible time yesterday. Maybe that was all a cover up. Maybe I scared him by being to blatant. Maybe he didn't want anything to do with me anymore. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
Well my mood went downhill very quickly. The best things never last.
