Ugh. I haven't updated in three million years! I'm so sorry! I was so blocked!! I couldn't think of what to do next! But I've finally figured it out, and I hope you're ready for a new installment of Don't Be Shy!
Elena's POV
Caroline still held me against the wall with a tight grip and I struggled against it.
"Elena! I just want you to be safe!" Caroline exclaimed. She wasn't even breaking a sweat as I struggled, and in the moment, I loathed her for it.
"You don't understand." I said, gritting my teeth.
She raised her eyebrows.
"I understand perfectly well, Elena. Haven't we already gone over this? Katherine compelled you!"
I looked desperately from side to side, hoping anyone could help me.
"Caroline, it's not what you think. Katherine isn't a bad person!"
Caroline closed her eyes as if she were pondering what I had said.
"I don't know how much she compelled you, but you're crazy! She killed someone, Elena!"
I looked up at her. This was news to me.
"She killed someone?"
"Yes. So she deserves to die! Can't you see?" Caroline said impatiently.
I shook my head.
"You're a liar." I told her.
She was clearly surprised. Her grip on me loosened, but not enough to wiggle out of. I tried to get her to loosen the grip even more.
"Katherine isn't a bad person. You haven't even gotten to know her."
"She suffocated me with a pillow!" Caroline said. With that statement, she pushed me against the wall.
Something cracked in my back pocket, and my eyes widened.
I had forgotten that there was a pencil in my jeans.
Slowly, I reached into my pocket with the arm that Caroline wasn't tightly holding down, and pulled out the pencil, trying to be as unnoticed as possible.
"I'm sorry, Caroline." I whispered.
She looked at me strangely, right before I stabbed her arm with the broken pencil.
She cried out in pain and let go of me.
As soon as she did, I ran as fast as I possibly could towards Katherine's building, not looking back once.
I rushed through the hotel, not bothering with the elevator as I ran up the stairwell.
"Katherine!" I yelled, pounding on her door.
For all I knew, Caroline could be right behind me, so I turned the doorknob, to my surprise, it opening.
I walked inside, locking the door behind me.
The inside of the hotel room was an absolute wreck.
Tables and chairs were broken, a sofa knocked over. A lamp lay shattered in the corner, and a stake was stuck in the wall.
I walked through every room, but there was no sign of a Salvatore brother, nor Katherine.
I assumed the fight had made its way out of the hotel, and the closest and most subtle way to have a vampire fight would probably be the forest. As I made my way towards the door, I saw it jiggle and heard Caroline yell,
"Elena!" frantically.
I backed away from the door. She could break through it any second now, and my only option was out the window.
I opened it, and gulped as I saw the sidewalk below.
But there were vines attached the old hotel, and I could climb the rope in gym. How hard could this be?Katherine's POV
The Salvatores were right on my heels. I ran as fast as I could, but I knew they would catch up anyway.
I took a sharp turn, dodging trees as I did.
The rustling behind me told me that the brothers hadn't fallen for my trick, and angry, I skidded to a stop.
"No more running." I told them.
Stefan and Damon stood side by side.
"Go on." I said, gesturing wildly.
"Fight me. I want to see which Salvatore has the guts to kill-"
I was cut off as Stefan sped forward, and wasting no time, stabbed me with the stake.
God damn it. How could I be this idiotic?
It hurt like hell. It had missed my heart, but had come close. I could feel the wood scraping against my heart, and I closed my eyes, silently screaming from the pain.
Before Stefan could truly stake me, I slipped out of his grasp and ran, coughing, and before I could get very far, collapsing on the ground.
"Let her go. She's weak. We'll find Elena and keep her safe." I heard Damon say, and then I heard their footsteps go farther and farther away until I couldn't hear them anymore.
"Bastards." I said breathlessly, once I was sure they were completely gone.
I felt so weak. I lay on the ground, afraid to move, as it might make the stake shift places and plunge into my heart.
As I lay as still as I could, I stared up at the top of the trees and wished Elena was here.
She was always the optimist, and though I tried to imagine what she would do in this situation, I could only think of negative things.
I was always the negative person, always the one to assume the worst out of people, even though I was almost the one to do the worst things. In fact, I hadn't even told Elena what I had done to that girl on the bike. And I couldn't lie to her.
"Katherine!" a voice said out of nowhere. My vision was slowly blurring and I couldn't see what it was.
"Elena?" I asked groggily.
"Oh my god. What happened?"
Came the answer.
"What do you think?" I said.
The next thing I knew, the stake was carefully pulled out of me. I lay there until I was healed, and I sighed.
"Thank you." I said, sitting up and finding myself staring into Elena's concerned eyes.
"We don't have a lot of time." Elena said.
"I got out of the hotel room just as Caroline came in, and I'm pretty sure she and Damon and Stefan will be wanting to find us."
Without a response, I leaned in and kissed her.
"I have to tell you something." I whispered into her ear.
She tried to protest, something about time, but I stopped her.
"If I don't tell you, I'm going to regret it for the rest of my life. I killed someone, Elena. I killed a human being, an innocent human being. I'm so sorry. I know you thought I'd changed, but the truth is-"
"So it's true." she interrupted me.
I nodded, ashamed.
"But I don't care." she continued.
Well then. The innocent Elena didn't care about me killing someone.
"I love you." she said.
She then smiled, looking down at me.
"I really do love you, and I want to be with you. More than anything else in the world."
She kissed me, and as much as I tried to enjoy it, I couldn't.
Elena Gilbert finds out I killed someone and then doesn't care, and tells me she loves me?
What the hell was I doing to her? This wasn't the Elena I knew and loved.
She was changing, and I didn't like the changes.
If I loved her, I had to let her go.
