Friday’s dinner was awkward. Sure my parents knew Ashton would be there. Sure they knew he was my boyfriend. I just haven’t seen my parents in about a year and that's why it was strange between the three of us. So now there is the five of us; Ashton is sitting next to me and Tyler opposite us with my parents at either end of the table. The cutlery is hitting against the plate. The only sounds being made are the clanks of the forks and knifes cutting into the meal.

Tyler clears his throat and says, “Mom, Dad, are you going to say something?” My dad looks at me while putting the wine glass to his lips. I watch him take a sip before he clears his throats and his eyes flicker between me and Ashton.

“So Ashton, where are you from again?”

“I live in a small village near Dublin, but I sort of messed up my exams and so I ended up moving over to the USA to go to school, which is where I met Scarlett.” he takes a drink and I shift my gaze to Ash. I see that his skins look a little warm so I can tell he's a little nervous about my parents are analyzing him. “Well, everyone around here seems nice.”

“It depends who you have met,” My mother says, her voice is sharp and her eyes narrow just a tiny bit. I would think that her eyes are a bit evil in Ashton’s direction.

“I knew Jordan before I came here. He’s changed a lot, I would say.” My mother looks a little angry by this statement. “Carter seems alright. Including Jace, Harrison, Gracie...”

“Scarlet!” My dad says and looks up from my plate and I stare at him. “I don’t like the girl you have turned into. You are an open book who manages to manipulate everyone who stands her in your way. I took a hit for you and I don’t like how you have been treating your mother and me today. We haven’t seen you in a year and I feel like you see us as nothing more than dirt.”

“I don’t see you as dirt, I see myself as dirt. Everyone around me is smiling, and happy and full of life. Yet everyone in my family seems to be ashamed of me, even being a part of our family. I admit it. I hurt some people, I did something stupid. But now, I am being watched by the cops again because everyone thinks I am some mental girl who doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong. If you don’t mind, I would like to be excused from the table.” Ashton mutters sorry to my family before following me up the stairs. But before I get into my room, he grabs my wrist and turns me around.  His lips touch my forehead and he pulls me into a hug. Tears begin to form in my eyes and it’s not long before they slide down my cheek.

He puts his hands on my shoulders and looks me right in the eye, “You know I care about you but think about it. At least they are trying to help you out. Give them a chance before you act like that.” Before I reply, there is a knock on the door. Ashton pulls me into a hug and I wrap my arms around his neck but I have to stand on my tiptoes to hug him with ease.  I hear voices in the hall before my named is called. I bring Ashton down with me. In the hallway the same officer who interviewed me when I was twelve is there. My father is in the door and he sent me a glare but doesn’t say anything. I was the reason my father went to jail and this is the person who locked him away.
