Lainie's POV

"Wake up,"Rick said entering mine and Carl's room.

"It's time for breakfast. Carol and Beth are making pancakes." He finished

He exited the room and I got out of bed and crawled down the ladder. Carl was already gone. I checked my watch on my wrist and it read 8:07 am.

I got dressed and put my hair into a French braid behind my head. I put on a blue shirt that someone had left for me and my pair of jeans that I had been wearing when I arrived yesterday. I left the room and walked to the dining room.

As I walked down the hallway I saw Carl sitting in a seat with a plate of pancakes in front of him and one next to him. I noticed me was sitting as far from the door Derek entered as possible.

"Hey," I said as I sat down next to him.

"Mornin' Lainie." He said as he smiled and looked up at me.

I smiled back at him and started to eat my pancakes.

10 minutes later

"Lainie," Rick said as he sat down next to me.

"Yes." I replied

He handed me and sheet of paper with tasks on it.

"These are your chores for today." He explained.

The chores list read:
•8:20-9:10 brush and wash horses
•9:20-10:45 kitchen duty
•10:45-12:00 collect food from garden/wash food
•12:10-12:45 lunch
•12:55-2:10 free period
•2:20-3:35 babysit Judith
•3:45-5:00 kitchen duty
•5:10-5:45 dinner

"The times are listed on her for when you do what and you should be able to tell time with your watch." He said motioning to my wrist.

"Okay," I responded. "What time do I start?"

"Five minutes." Rick said as he stood up tapping the table and walked away.

Five minutes later.

I put my plate in the sink as Carol wash washing other plates on the other side of the split sink. I walked out the front door and strolled down to the horse pen. Beth was already there and bricking a light brown horse.

"Hey!" I greeted her smiling, she seemed happy for it to be so early.

"Hi," she responded looking up and smiling. "Are you and Carl getting along since you've been rooming together?" She asked, trying to be kind.

"Yeah, he's pretty quiet though." I replied grabbing a brush from the bucket and coming over to brush a light blonde horse with mud stains near the top of her hooves.

"Really?" She asked laughing and sounding slightly astonished.

"He's normally really outgoing, not the longest temper either." She said, still laughing slightly.

"Seriously?" I asked she nodded as she raised her eyebrows and game a subtle "yeah".

"But he's like a father to Judith, he can be so sweet if he wants to but other times he just doesn't care. He went through a time where he used to 'mess around with other girls'." She then said, giving air quotes as she said 'mess around with other girls'.
