Sitting in second period the next day I glared at the angry red D+ that was written at the top of my physics test. I was frustrated with myself. Frustrated that I wasn't smart enough, wasn't good enough to do well. I had even stayed up all night studying and I still couldn't manage to pass the stupid exam.

The voice inside my head started laughing its deep evil laugh.

DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU COULD GET AN A ON THIS TEST WITH THAT DUMB MIND OF YOURS? YOU ARE A WORTHLESS SORRY EXCUSE OF A PERSON. NO ONE LIKES YOU, WHO WOULD LIKE SUCH A STUPID, UGLY, PITIFUL GIRL LIKE YOU?

"Shut up," I mumbled quietly, desperately trying not to draw attention to myself in the middle of class.

DO YOU REALLY THINK I WOULD GO AWAY THAT EASILY? STUPID, STUPID GIRL. I AM AND WILL ALWAYS BE HERE WITH YOU. YOU AND I ARE GOING TO BE TOGETHER FOREVER.

"Shut up," I said, a little more forcefully this time. I did not know who that voice was or what it wanted. It was just a blur of a face hiding in the back of my mind. It was a lion, patiently waiting to strike and prey on my insecurities.

"Hey are you okay?" A soft voice said from beside me.

I turned my head and I was met with the warmest brown eyes I have ever seen. The boy had bright blue hair that was cropped on the sides and the top stuck up in different angles. Small black gauges were located in each of his ears. When he moved his head, a glint of silver light caught my eye. When I looked closer I saw that he had a silver nose ring in his left nostril.

"Checking me out already?" He asked with an amused expression.

"Uh-um ... I wasn't checking you out," I managed to stutter out as I felt my cheeks warm up.

"I'm sure you weren't, you still didn't answer my question though."

"Oh yeah, sorry. You're fine..." I said breathlessly. My eyes widened after realizing what I just said. "I mean I'm fine not you're fine! Not that you're not fine I mean you are but that's not what I meant to say and I-" my rant was cut off by laughter. The boy was doubled over his seat laughing his heart out, and his laugh was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

How come I never noticed him until today? It was only the second month of school but surely I would've seen him. He sits right next to me for goodness sake's! Not to mention he's gorgeous.

After what seemed like an eternity he stopped laughing and looked up and met my eyes intently.

"God, you're adorable."

I froze. No one has ever called me adorable before.

HE'S LYING. YOU ARE UGLY AND YOU ALWAYS WILL BE UGLY. HE JUST FEELS SORRY FOR YOU. YOU'RE PATHETIC.

"I'm Joshua, Joshua Dun, but you can call me Josh. Or, as my best friend calls me, Dog Breath. But I can assure you my breath does not smell like dogs, despite what Tyler might say," he said with a wide grin on his face and his hand stretched out.

I giggled and took his hand, shaking it. "I'm Arielle, Arielle Maden."

"Miss Maden, Mr. Dun, would like to share with the class what you two have been talking about this whole time?" Miss Vanbury, our AP Physics teacher, asked.

"No ma'am!" Josh replied with a grin.

I shook my head and went back to work. Moments later, a neatly folded up piece of paper was put on my desk. I curiously opened it up and saw it was a note.

'Would you like to have lunch with me and my best friend Tyler today?
-Josh'

I smiled as I read the note, happy that someone actually wanted to talk to me. I wrote 'Yes' under his note and handed it back to him.

HE JUST FEELS SORRY FOR YOU, the voice shouted in my head. My heart sank, maybe it's right, maybe he does feel sorry for me.

YOU'RE NOTHING SPECIAL, WHY WOULD HE WANT TO TALK TO YOU?

I decided to ignore it and I went back to my work. Moments later, the folded up piece of paper returned back to my desk.

'P.S: I know you really aren't fine.
-Josh'

I didn't know whether to be relieved because I didn't have to hide anymore, or terrified because someone knew what I was actually feeling.
