Kahari POV
I fell asleep on the couch & wake up to noises. I don't see Monte & the door is wide open. I go outside & his car is still here. I close the door & follow the noises. In the guest room I see Monte taped to ah chair, I run in & try to get all the tape off.
"Are they still here?" I ask Monte, being careful to keep my voice low. He nods his head yes.
"Man just who I been looking for. Wassup boo?" I turn around & it's my ex boyfriend Shane.
"How did you find me?" I ask. He walks towards me & caresses my cheek. "I can always find my way back to you." I pull away.
"You could've asked me to talk, what is all this about? You come in & tape my boyfriend up, for what?"
"Boyfriend?"
"Yes, boyfriend."
"Don't let that slip outta your mouth again, you got me?"
"He is my boyfriend." He slapped me across my face & I fell. He used to hit me when he got mad, I hated him.
"No he isn't! You do what I tell you to do! I run you!" He grabbed my arm tight. "You understand me?" He yelled.
"Yes."
"Good, now get up & come on." I follow him into the hallway & he takes me to the living room. "I know you miss me, don't you?" I don't say anything. He pulls me on his lap & I tense up. Then an idea pops into my head.
"Loosen up, I'm sorry for hitting you." He says. I wrap my arms around his neck.
"I know, it's okay. I did miss you." He smiles & sits his gun down. "You know what? Lets go somewhere. Get up, lets go." He gets up & just like I hoped he didn't pick his gun up, I grabbed it & hit him in the back of the head with it. He started bleeding but turned around & pushed me to the floor, I dropped the gun. I crawled for it but he beat me. He picked it up & shot me in my arm. I screamed out in pain.
He aimed about to shoot again & it's like my life started flashing in front of my eyes. I thought of everything, even childhood then .. POW!
Monte POV
I heard gunshots & I ripped the tape off of me. It's like ah strength came outta nowhere. I ran to the living room & the door was wide open then I saw Kahari laying on the floor bleeding & not moving, I ran to her.
"Baby get up, wake up Kahari! Kahari! Wake up!" I get up & call 911. They get here in less than 5 minutes, I guess they were already in the area. I rode in the ambulance with her. They took her in surgery & I went & sat down, I can't keep still for anything. Her parents walk in crying & they see me.
"It's your fault! It's all your fault! What did you do to my baby?!" Her mom yells at me & starts hitting me. Kahari's dad pulls her from me & comes back after about 10 minutes.
"What happened?"
"Her ex boyfriend.." He cuts me off.
"Shane?"
"I don't know his name. He looked mixed, really big like somebody on steroids or something." Her dad walked off after that. I don't know what he's about to do but I gotta pretty good idea.
After about 6 hours the doctor came out & told us she was in critical condition & on life support. I dropped down to my knees & cried. "What am I supposed to do without her? She's my life line!" Her dad gets me up & helps me to ah chair. Me & all of her other family members are in tears, not knowing what to do.
They finally let us go up to see her after 2 days. Her mom & dad are going to get ah change of clothes so I have her to myself. I pull up ah chair next to her.
"Kahari, I need you to talk ma. Okay? I need to hear your sweet voice, just let me know that you're gonna pull thru. Let me know you gonna make it, okay ma?" She hasn't talked or been awake since she came outta surgery 2 days ago. "Kahari I need you. You're every piece of me, me without you I'm nothing ma. I love you."
"I .." My head shot up.
"That's it babe, do it. You can do it. I love you, come on." My heart started beating fast.
"I .. Love .. You" I looked up at her & smiled. I spent the rest of the day with her.
Kahari POV
I still feel weak but I'm better than I was yesterday when I couldn't move. Mama brought SJ by to see me & I was in deep thought.
"Mama if something ever happened to me & Monte & we died, what would you do with SJ?"
"What? Lets not talk like that." She said.
"No mama, I just wanna know."
"I would raise him as my own."
"Oh."
"Where's all that coming from?"
"I don't know, I was just thinking .. It's nothing." She came & kissed me & I kissed SJ.
"I love you my little SJ."
"I love you mommy." I shed ah tear, I don't know why but sadness swept over me. Mama walked out then I got weak & started hearing ah loud noise, my eyes closed.
Monte POV
They put Kahari's casket into the ground & that's when I lost it, I can't be around anymore. I gave SJ to her daddy then walked to my car & pulled off. I went & changed clothes then hit the block with some of my boys. We went down to the corner store for some chips & stuff. When we walked out I heard bullets, it's like I couldn't hit the ground fast enough .. Or maybe I didn't want to. I felt ah pain go straight thru my chest & I fell to the ground.
"Get up Monte!" All my boys ran over to me.
"I love y'all man."
"We love you too but we finna get you to the hospital, we gotta go!"
"No .." Blood was now coming outta my mouth. "I wanna see my baby girl, I gotta .. I'm on my way to see .. Kahari."

Monte died with ah smile on his face.
All he wanted was to have Kahari back & that's what he got I'm guessing, maybe he really was smiling for ah reason. They buried him right next to her. Kahari's mom & dad are raising SJ as their own, Monte's mom wanted no part of him because he looked exactly like Monte. She breaks down crying every time she sees SJ.
Now y'all know why the title of the book is "Something I Never Had" .. It's because Kahari & Monte's relationship really is something most people never had & never will have, when they kept saying they were each other's lifeline it truly meant something.
