(Luke's P. O. V.)
We waited for a little longer, impatiently of course, until a doctor holding a clipboard finally came out to speak with us.
"Hello Miss Brooks, I'm the doctor working on your brother. Unfortunately, he is extremely unstable." He began and we all held our breath.
"The impact of the other car caused him to crush his chest against the steering wheel. This caused serious damage to his heart, so serious that machines are only things keeping him alive at the moment. Not to mention the number of punctures in his lungs from his broken ribs only make it a battle to breath." He said as he looked through some papers on his clipboard.
"W-what are you saying?" My mother asked.
"We suggest you go and say your goodbyes. We don't think he'll make it through the night." He solemnly said to us.
Sharp pangs of sadness poked throughout my chest repetitively.
"My sincerest condolences." He nodded before walking away. Leaving all of us heartbroken and shocked.
We stood outside of Uncle Theo's hospital room for another few minutes in complete silence. None of us knew what to say. None of us knew what do to. None of us knew what to think. None of us knew what would happen next.
"Mum you should go first. I'm scared we're running out of time. He's your brother so you should be promised time." I was the first to speak.
She stared at me with teary eyes, and then she nodded and made her way into the enclosed hospital room.
It only felt like a few minutes, but turns out my mother was in with Uncle Theo for about two hours. I don't blame her though because goodbyes are truly painful if you know you'll never say hello again.
When she finally came back out, tear stains were down her cheeks and sadness was glazing over her eyes.
"Go on in boys. He wants to see you three." She smiled a broken smile and then she gently ushered us into the room.
When we got inside, Jai's hand slipped into my and Beau's hand. I squeezed his hand tightly, because the sight we saw was truly heart wrenching.
Uncle Theo was hooked up to a bunch of wires and needles. He had cuts and bruises on every inch of his body, the loud breathing machines were almost deafening, and a heart monitor kept was keeping a steady rhythm. If it weren't for the heart monitor, I'd assume he were dead.
My brothers and I didn't say anything. No, we only walked closer to the side of Uncle Theo's bed. I suppose he heard our footsteps, because his eyes cracked open and he gave us a soft smile.
"Hello boys. You all alright?" He asked us with a raspy voice.
"Why are you asking if we're alright? You're the one in the hospital bed Uncle T." Beau said as tears began to fill his eyes.
"I'm still your uncle though aren't I? An uncle's job is to care and make his nephews laugh." He added with a bigger smile.
"Now listen boys, I'm sure you....you all know why you're here with me right now." He took a deep breath, more like a gasp.
"I can't...I can't fight much longer. My hearts been beating for 47 years, and I think it finally time for a well deserved rest. My crazy mindset has put my heart through races and leaps. I lit my heart at young age for wanderlust, and just like any flame, it eventually burns out." He said to us and I could hear the fear behind his voice.
