Chapter 15:
Mel's POV
"It is my understanding that you were under the influence when you attacked your daughter. Do you remember exactly what happened the night of April 15th?"
"I remember bits and pieces." My father says and Harvey nods.
"You remember bits and pieces of something your daughter will never forget sir."
"Do you remember entering your daughters room and punching her, knocking her off her feet?" Asks Harvey and my father frowns.
"No." He says.
"Do you remember kicking her in the ribs so hard your broke them? Or how you punched her in the face so hard you broke her nose? Do you remember the cracking of those bones? Her cries of agony?" Says Harvey and I cringe at the memories.
"Your honour objection, what does this have to do with the charges on Mr. Jenson?"
"Overruled, Harvey stay on topic." She says and he nods.
"Do you remember calling her 'a worthless piece of shit' and saying 'I should kill you right here and now.'?" Questions Harvey.
"Objection!" Yells my fathers lawyer, Andrew.
"Overruled." Says the judge, nodding at my father to answer the question.
"No I do not remember saying that."
"Do you remember dragging your daughter down the stairs and watching as she went unconscious?" Asks Harvey and I clench my hands into fists under the table.
"Yes I remember that but it is fuzzy." Says my father and I can hear the guilt in his voice.
"It says here that the eye witnesses ran into your house to find you bashing your unconscious daughters head into your floor. Is this true?" Asks Harvey and my fathers eyes fill with pain but he won't look at me.
"Yes this is true." He says and I tell myself not to cry.
"And you wouldn't stop, the eye witness had to drag you off of your daughter, who was dying."
"Yes, but I didn't know what I was doing." He pleads.
"But you just said you recall doing these things, yet now you are trying to claim that you didn't know what you were doing to your daughter?" Says Harvey.
"Objection!" Roars Andrew.
"Overruled!" Shouts the judge and I watch as Andrew sinks back down.
"I didn't want to kill her. I didn't know what I was doing, I was drunk and angry!" Cries my father and Harvey's face remains blank as does mine.
"So what you are saying is, you were drunk, you beat your daughter until she was unconscious, than continued to beat her until she stopped breathing. You remember doing this yet you are now saying you didn't know what you where doing at the time?" Questions Harvey and my father starts to cry.
"I didn't, Melissa, please listen to me, I love you, I didn't mean to-" He is cut off by his lawyer who calms him down before Harvey proceeds.
"Mr. Preston, has an event like this occurred in the past?" Asks Harvey and my dads shoulders sag.
"Yes." He whispers.
"Just once, or multiple time?" Asks Harvey and I tense up, thinking of all the times I was his punching bag.
"Multiple times." My father says, his face crumpling.
"No further questions your honour." Says Harvey, taking a seat next to me.
