Chapter 2: A New Beginning

Melissa's POV

I wake up to a dull beeping noise. My head is pounding. I try to open my eyes but it's to bright.

Where am I? I wonder and I hear voices coming from next to me.

"They found her at the bottom of her staircase. Her face was bloody and battered. She has two broken ribs, a severe concussion and a broken ankle. She's lucky to be alive."
I suddenly remember what happened last night. My father, him beating me up, me falling into blissful unconsciousness. I know that I'm in a hospital. The one place I hate more than my house.

I groan an finally open my eyes. I see a doctor and a lady that looks very familiar to me.

"Melissa." She whispers with tears I her eyes. My brain is still struggling to function and figure out who this lady is. I stare at her blankly.

"And you are?" I ask, my voice raspy.

"Anne Preston, your mothers best friend." The lady says and I remember her now. She use to visit us every summer with her son who's name I can't think of.

"Sup?" I ask sarcastically as my head throbs, and she comes over and hugs me. I immediately tense up and try not to groan in pain. My arms stay at my sides and I don't move a muscle. She leans back and looks at me before backing away.

"When will she be ready to go?" Asks Anne and I start to panic inside. Please don't send me back home. I silently pray as the beeps become more frequent.

"She can go as soon as you sign her out." Says the doctor.

"Perfect!" Says Anne as she turns to me. She looked at the heart monitor and frowned at it.

"You don't have to worry now. You're moving in with me." She says and my eyes almost fall out of my head.

"Awesome." I mutter and I clamber out of the hospital bed.

"DON'T PUT WEIGHT ON YOUR ANKLE!" Yells the doctor and I quirk and eyebrow at him.

"This is nothing Mike, as you know, I can handle more than a little pain." I bite back and he rolls his eyes and hand me some crutches. You know you've been in the hospital when the you and the doctor are on a nick name basis.

"We will just run home so you can grab your stuff and than we will drive to my place." She says with a warm smile and I look back at her stunned.

"Where is my father?" I ask through gritted teeth.

"He's in jail. Your mothers will said you got to live with me so when I heard about... The incident I rushed down here to come see you." She explains and I nod my head.

"How long have I been unconscious?" I ask and the doctor Michael speaks up.

"Its been five days." he says and my jaw drops, noticing my reaction he starts to ramble again.

"Thats actually the best thing that could happen for you, it'll help heal your brain much more efficiently if you don't use it and you didn't use it at all for five days."

"Whatever you say doc."

I stand up, ignoring how my ribs and body screamed in protest and how the room is spinning. I was aching and probably bruised all over but I got to my foot and crutches. I grabbed my clothes and went to the restroom and changed. I came back in the room and see Anne talking to the doctor. I walked outta the room. "Thanks Mike, it was nice knowing you." I say as I leave the room.

"Not so fast Meli. Mrs. Preston is gonna wheel you out to the car." Says Michael and I roll my eyes.

"Bogus." i mutter as I sit down in the stupid wheel chair.
