So, I uploaded this chapter a while back. But as I was rereading the entire story, I felt unsatisfied with where it was headed so I decided to redo this chapter. Sorry!

RYAN’S POV

So many things don’t even make sense. I mean, who leaves their apartment just because they’re sick. And who doesn’t call or text the person they ran out on in the middle of the night to tell them that they’ll be gone for a week. I have to find out the mystery that is Kaya Kingsley.

KAYA’S POV

“So, you coming in or what?”

I don’t know what made me think it would be alright to allow Ryan to come over to my place before the party. He had been so persistent though, it was just easier to say yes.

“Yeah, sorry, got distracted.”

“Distracted? By what? An empty hallway?”

“Nah, I was just thinking. Who’s Ashton?”

I stall by walking to the kitchen to get some soda before heading towards the living room. I don’t exactly want to be a liar, but I also cannot tell him the truth.

“Just some guy I work with. He owed me a favor.”

“I think he likes you. Where do you work?”

“Hah, yeah right.” Ashton liking me, fat chance. I think he’s hated me ever since I saved his ass. “I just work at some office building downtown. Boring stuff. I never get to do anything exciting.”

“I could visit you sometime. I could always bring some excitement.” He winks at me and I can’t help but laugh.

“Get your mind out of the gutter and lets get to this  stupid party, yeah?”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to a high school party. It’s definitely a lot different than the ones I went to back home. Different, yet eerily similar. I guess wherever you go, there will be drunk teenagers grinding on each other and making out.

I don’t want Ryan to think I came here with him or anything. Even though I guess technically I did come with him. What I mean is, I don’t want him to think I’m WITH him so I split from him and make my way into the crowd once we’re in the building. I decide not to drink even though that was the only reason I wanted to come in the first place. Instead I decide to do some recon. The best time to learn about your classmates is when they’re drunk and don’t think you’re paying attention.

I’m not really looking out for anyone in particular. Just keeping my eyes open and seeing what happens. That’s when I overhear some loser talking to his loser friends about how he scored some rufies and is planning on spiking drinks.

I walk over and put on my best moves. I’m not wearing this suffocating dress for nothing.

“Baby, you look so hott in that dress. It’s like it was made for your ass!” Charming.

“Well stud, I’m glad you’re enjoying the view. Be a gentleman and get a girl a drink.”

I toss the drink when he isn’t looking and start acting like I’ve had a few too many. Just as I planned, he starts dragging me off somewhere. Just wait until I’ve got you somewhere secluded, you creep. It seems as though he just couldn’t wait though because he starts trying to make out with me right in the middle of the living room where everyone is dancing. I knee him right in the balls and prepare to storm off when I’m slapped right across the face. I really should have been able to prevent that, but I definitely wasn’t expecting some chick to come at me!

“Bitch! That’s my boyfriend you just hurt! Babes, are you alright?” What the hell. This guy had a girlfriend?? Who plans on drugging someone at a party that their girlfriend is at? Who plans on drugging anyone anyway?

She seemed preoccupied with her injured boyfriend so I decided to just walk away. That is, until she thought it would be a good idea to tackle me to the floor.

In one swift movement I spun us around so I was sitting on top of her (I’m sure some guys had to excuse themselves to somewhere more private after seeing us if you know what I mean). Normally I would just say screw it and walk away. But this time I’ve decided to say screw it and punch her right in her perfect, fake nose. It starts spewing blood everywhere and I smile knowing I broke it. That smile went away quickly when I looked up to see Ryan frowning at me. I got up just as he turned around and started leaving.

“Hey! Where you running off to so quickly?”

“Running away like you always do?” I guess I deserved that one. Wait a second, no I didn’t! What did I do to him? Absolutely nothing, that’s what.

“I didn’t mean to break her nose.”

“Yeah? So why were you so happy about it?”

“Because I was happy it happened?” I wasn’t lying. I really hadn’t been trying to break her nose. I’ve just had a rough week and punched harder than I planned to. And I was happy about that. “She attacked me first anyway. I was just defending myself.”

“Well clearly you knew what you were doing. There was no need to go so far.”

“You kidding me right now. Geez, her damn boyfriend was talking about drugging people. Innocent girls just so he could get laid. So I kicked him well and good. It’s not my fault she’s got shit taste in men.”

“Drugging people? I didn’t see anyone in there doing anything they didn’t want to do.”

“Yeah, because I took care of it.”

“You know what. I can’t even deal with this right now. Why should I even believe you? I’m tired of you being so secretive. Nothing you say seems to ever be the truth! And who enjoys breaking peoples’ nose? Psychopaths, that’s who.” If only he met a real psychopath. He’d think I was as harmless as a sleeping baby.

RYAN’S POV

After I stormed off and had time to think about everything that had happened, I began to think maybe Kaya was telling the truth about the guy trying to drug people. I know I shouldn’t have gotten so upset, I just couldn’t understand why she would attack someone like she did.

All I know is that Kaya was kicked out of her last school. Maybe fighting is the reason why. I don’t want her to get kicked out of Madison, sent away somewhere where we can never hang out again. I don’t know what it is about her that just makes me want to get to know here. I’m a football jock with famous parents. I could have any girl I wanted. So why is it that the one girl I might actually like, doesn’t seem to want anything to do with me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Look Ed, whatever is going on, can it wait until tomorrow? I just had a mission, a pretty tough one too. And it’s only been a day since I’ve been back. There have got to be other people here to cover for me.” I didn’t want to tell him that I was also still bummed about last night at the party. Or should I say after the party when Ryan totally bailed on me. I mean, I know we weren’t there together or anything, but how could he judge me like that. He doesn’t even know me. Heck, I know more about him than he does about me and I don’t even judge him. Although I guess he’s never really done anything bad to judge…

“Kaya! Are you listening?”

“Actually, no. Sorry Ed. Anyway, can I get a day off? There are so many more people here than normal anyway.”

I began to worry when he just looked at me. What the hell did I miss?

“I was going to tell you when you first got back but you were so exhausted…”

“Bloody hell Ed, just out with it already.”

“Your parents are still alive.”
