My body rushed with heat and I felt numb. I couldn’t feel a single thing on my body – my feet, my hands, my legs, nothing. AJ’s comforting grasp on me had vanished along with my integrity. I could vaguely hear the sound of AJ’s footsteps getting farther and farther away, but my heart was beating so loudly that it was hard to hear anything.
I felt sick; sick to my stomach. I wanted to puke ever so badly. My words, so many to say, wouldn’t come out of my mouth. They were lodged in the back of my throat just like an eraser that I had once swallowed when I was very little.
Nothing can explain and no excuses would work. That was indeed Brady’s child. No matter how much I want to deny it, it is by all means 100% Brady’s. Who would have thought that one moment of weakness and desperation could have turned into this big of a mess?
My mom came strolling back in: laughing to herself about something. “Oh, it was great to catch up on things with them, wasn’t it?” My mother asked, grabbing herself a beer from the refrigerator. When she turned around, it didn’t take her long to read both of our expressions and realize something bad was going on.
“What’s going on here?” My mother asked, confused. She ran over to my side and put her arms around me. “That’s a great question.” AJ’s strong voice echoed in our house. I had never heard him talk like this before. “What is going on here Amber?” He questioned with great heaviness and anger.
“You look like you’re going to feint my dear.” My mother said, attempting to lead me to the couch, however, my feet would not cooperate. “Honey,” She continued to try. My vision was even impaired. Finally, AJ came into my site and was now centered right in front of me; his eyes were extremely intense and his expression was stern. “Amber, please tell me that what Brady said was not true.”
My mom took a step back from me too, still confused at what was taking place. “What did Brady say?” I regained some sort of feeling back in my mouth; however, I was still at a loss for words. “I –” My voice cracked and I couldn’t finish the sentence. “Amber. Tell me.” AJ’s voice was demanding now.
Another moment of silence passed by and even more tension filled the air. Finally my mom had enough. “Alright, somebody explain to me what the hell is going on!” I sighed heavily and finally made some sort of words come out of my mouth. “Mitchell… is not AJ’s child.” I forced myself to say.
My mom now looked like she was going to feint. “Oh good god,” She breathed and made her way toward the couch. “Amber you didn’t.” My mother’s face was distant, although my focus was now on AJ. AJ was furious. “How did this happen?” He questioned.
“I don’t know! Okay? It was one moment of weakness. It was before you came back into my life. I was… happy for once. Do you know how long it was since I had been truly happy? It was over a full year! A whole year I had to sit and sulk over you! Brady finally changed that for one day and I got carried away! It was wrong and it was stupid, but it happened! Who would have thought that one time would result in my pregnancy! So I’m sorry! I’m sorry for screwing up, I’m sorry for ruining everyone’s life, and I’m just flat out sorry!” My breath now seized to exist and tears replaced my yelling.
AJ, without saying another word, took off behind me towards the door and slammed it shut, leaving me behind. My mother finally got up off the couch and decided to comfort me. “I’m such a terrible person,” I cried. The physical pain I felt in my heart at this moment was so extreme that I felt like I was going to burst.
