I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know what to do. My mother, now in her early forties, is having another child while I’m in college. My stomach rumbled and jumped at the thought of how weird this new information is, but I tried not to show how disturbed I was. “Wow, that’s- that’s great!” I said, probably blinking my eyes a hundred times per second.
She smiled and squeezed my hands. “Oh, honey! I’m so happy! I mean, now that you’re all grown up I won’t have anyone to take care of anymore. Besides your father, but he’s always at work anymore.” I nodded my head, pretending like I was listening to her babble, but I wasn’t. Pregnant? My mom was pregnant? At her age? I never in a million years would have thought that my own mother would be the type to pop one out at the age of fourty.
“You can’t tell your father yet though, alright? He doesn’t know. I’m trying to figure out a way to tell him.” My mother said, luckily as I just was starting to focus on what she was saying again. “I won’t mom, you can trust me.” I gave her a big hug as she slightly wept joyful tears. “When did you find out?” I asked, finally getting back to reality and asking questions. She wiped a few tears from her face and then answered me. “Well, I found out today. It came as a bit of a surprise to me. Believe me, I was not expecting it at all.” She laughed a little.
“When is it due?” I asked. She shrugged. “The doctor said that I’m about a month pregnant. So, sometime in November.” She smiled. “A little November baby. I got a November baby and a June baby.” I nodded. “Yeah, so did they tell you if it’s a boy or a girl?” I asked. She shook her head. “No, they asked me if I would like an estimate. Since I just went in for a check up and found out I was pregnant, they couldn’t determine too much. Also it’s pretty early yet.” She concluded. I took the hint and dropped the questions. “Well, I’m happy for you mom. I get a little sister or brother.” I smiled. I could tell from her expression that she was pleased to hear this.
“Well, I have to go downtown to get a few things. Do you need anything?” She asked. I shook my head. “Nah, I’m fine. Hey, if you run into Aliza, tell her to have Brady call me.” I said. My mom’s expression changed to show me sympathy. “I will honey. You still haven’t heard from him?” She asked. My face fell and I shook my head. “No.” She kissed my cheek and grabbed her purse. “I will honey, but I don’t gaurantee I’ll see her. See you in a bit.” She said, and then she was gone.
“Man, I can’t believe you’re doing this for me…” I trailed off, still not believing I was standing in the airport, about to board a plane to the Bahamas. Jordan shrugged and held Monica close to him. “Nah, man don’t mention it. Tell Amber ‘hey’ from all of us up here. Alright?” He smiled. Monica nodded. “Yes, and tell her to text me! She needs to keep me updated on everything! I miss her.” Monica added. I nodded. “I just can’t thank you guys enough. How could I ever repay you?” I asked. Jordan punched me in the arm. “You don’t. Just get your woman, okay? You’re clean now. As long as the next time I see you, you’re extremely happy with the woman you love, that’s the only repayment I need bro.” He said. I chuckled and threw him a quick nod as they called my flight.
“Get out of here.” Jordan said, waving at me. “Take lots of pictures. Text me. Whatever.” He said and I laughed. “Okay, see you.” I grabbed my luggage and started boarding the plane.
