Chapter 3
"Really?" Brady sounded surprised. I nodded. "Why not? They have a pretty good academic program." I shrugged and splashed some water onto my bare stomach. Brady continued to stare into the sunset. Stare into space was more like it.
"What? You seem surprised." I asked finally. He snapped out of it and stare at me with a million questions twinkling in his eyes. "Yeah, well I was expecting you to say something like Harvard or something. Or somewhere not far from here." Brady shrugged. "But I did say you could choose. Okay, let's pick 3 different colleges. Just for more of a range." My hopes dropped a million feet.
Even if I got accepted there's still Brady. Actually, it would probably be Brady getting accepted and me still sitting at home sulking. "Fine, Oregon State University, Washington State University and...California State University." Brady gave me a confused glance. "Okay...uh, I guess we could do that. Can I ask a question though? Why all along the west coast? And why all in a line?"
I rolled my eyes. "They're all by Oregon. Duh! And I thought you were the smart one." I splashed some more water onto my stomach. He still looked confused, then he put it all together. "You don't really care about the college do you? You just want to be back in Oregon." He sounded a little depressed. I nodded.
"Yeah...pretty much. Sorry. But you can go to the college you want to go to. I don't mind. Your dream has been to go to Harvard." He inhaled sharply, then exhaled. "No, it's...fine. I can go to Harvard next year. Right now, you need me." I smiled. "Thanks Brady, you're a good friend. Actually, correct that, you're the best friend in the world!" He chuckled and stood up, pulling me up with him.
We stood there, hand in hand, for a few minutes then Brady fell back into the sand. He laid there and showed off his perfect six pack, with the sun glinting off his tan skin. I giggled and fell by him. He put his arm around me.
That's what I liked about Brady. He made me feel so comfortable and we could still be close friends. There wasn't that pressure to be more than friends. It was just me and Brady. Just us.
"So princess. Your castle is awaiting you in Oregon." Brady joked. "Shut up. You told me I could choose. And don't get too cocky! We haven't even got in yet!" I punched him lightly in the arm. "Yeah I guess you're right. Hey, at least I'll get to see what's so great about Oregon. Huh?" He nudged me. I nodded. "Yeah. It's a dump when you first get there. Just to let you know. No where near this beautiful." Brady's stomach vibrated against my ear from his slight laughter. "Yeah, I know. I'm prepared. But I'll be there with you, that's all that matters."
Suddenly a horrible thought struck my mind. I shot up, leaving Brady still lying on the sand. I looked back at him with a little concern in my eyes. Of course Brady caught on. "What?" I just stared back. Finally he got up. "Amber, what's wrong?" He held me by my shoulders. "Brady, you know that we're just friends right? That you're my best friends I've ever had, but that's all we'll ever be." Brady wrapped his arms around me. "Are you sure about that?" He tried his best at seducing me. "Yes, I'm positive. You know who my heart belongs to. I just don't want to see you hurt." I shook my head at the thought. Having Brady go through what I'm going through.
Brady sighed. "I know, don't worry. I'm completely fine." He smiled at me not very convincingly. "Fine. Just as long as you don't get hurt. As long as you know." I shrugged. "Then there's no guilt on me." He laughed. "Yeah, don't worry about me." I nodded.
"Ribs are done! Whoa! Amber! You have like...life in you!" My dad yelled. I laughed uncomfortably. Then I felt the warm comfortable hands of Brady wrap around my waist and I was immediately comforted. "Yeah, I guess. Hey dad..." Then my mom walked out of the cabin and stood on the deck with my dad. "...and mom. Uh, me and Brady are going to college."
