The Arrival

I woke up around 7am. Me and my nana, ( my grand mother) were going on our annual summer vacation. Normally we went to the ocean. This year would be different. We were going to West Virginia. I got ready and went in the living room. I stayed with her the night before. I sat and waited for her to finish up. We made sure we were all set. We had all our beauty supplies, clothes, bathroom stuff, and anything else we could cram in. We kissed my papaw ( my grandfather ) goodbye as we packed up in her Chrysler 300. She had the car for a while. But it was still nice and silver.

I set our GPS up to take us to our place. We had booked a bed and breakfast room 3 months ago. It was a old Victorian house that was turned into a bed and breakfast. I have never stayed in one so hopefully it would be fun. We drove for about 30 miles until we got into the city. We stopped at McDonalds to get some food. The weather had changed from humid to hot. 98 degrees. After eating we were back on the road.

I never did like riding on long highways because there was nothing to see. All grass and trees. I looked around. My iPad was in the floor. I got it and played some games but they were just not interesting. Nana must have noticed because she turned on some music. It must have helped because it seemed like no time until we were in another big city.

Nana grabbed on the steering wheel and turned the music down. I laughed at her because she was so focused on the cars around her. She smiled and slowed down. All the sudden a guy came flying passed us. "Holy crap!" She said and slammed on the breaks. I just laughed. She was freaking out. You had us who were from a tiny town in a city full of idiots.

She saw an opening and sped into it. We weaved through cars and semi trucks. Even saw a crash here and there. They always interested me. I always wanted to see a crash happen I front of me. I always wanted to get out of the car and run up to the car that crashed and see the people inside. But that never happened.

When we got about midway in the traffic we saw this man on a motorcycle drive on the line and go right between two cop cars. They turned their lights on and chased him down. "Look at that!" I said as everyone moved off to the side. "A free pass" nana said and drove right between the cars pulled to the side. We went from 5mph to 60 in seconds. It was really fun to feel that rush of excitement. But it was also scary. Which made it better.

We finally got out of the mess of cars. "I have to use the bathroom, do you?" Nana asked. "No" I said. She was 60 years old but everyone, even me, said she looked 30. She always died her hair and had nice clothes. And she acted 17 sometimes. That is why I loved her. She was so funny. She saw a rest stop and pulled over. She went in and I stayed in the car. I looked around. Kids were walking all over the place. Some were with their parents while some were alone. There was even a park behind the building.

5 minutes or so passed till nana came back. "How many miles?" She asked. I looked at the GPS "127" I said. "Geez. Don't want to drive that far." She complained. "Sorry. I can't do it" I said. She looked at me and smiled. She backed out and got back on the road.

We drove for a few more miles until we passed a old barn that looked like it had seen its end. "Man that looks haunted" I said. Nana just laughed. She never talked about stuff like that. And she didn't want me to talk about it because she didn't want to hear it. But that is all I did. I grew up in a house where I could see and hear things no one else did. Stuff would fall off the counter, things would be there one minute then the next they would move. And nana knew it.

I always had a great interest in the paranormal and supernatural. I understood and studied the different signs and studies on it. I even had my share of encounters with ghosts. Sure it scared me the first time I saw one but I was only 6 or so. Now if I see something move or see someone standing some where and disappear I tell it to do it again or tell it is ok to be here. I have been able to hear voices calling my name and turn around to nothing. I have had a random thought pop up in my head and with in a few minutes my idea will be acted out I front of me by someone else. I have had dreams that will happen perfectly the next day. I also have had many answers to tests by dreaming them.

We drove pass the barn and talked about the place we were going. "So how old it it?" I asked. "About 320 years" nana said. "Is it clean" I asked. "I hope so" she said. We turned the raido back up and suffered through the rest of the drive. It took us 4 hours to get to where we needed to be but it was worth it.

When we got on the road our house was on we started putting stuff up in our bags. Nana looked around until she found it. "There it is" she said. I looked up. It was a tall pinkish looking old house. It had a pretty yard and all but I was not all that thrilled about it anymore. The voices in my head started to go crazy. Telling me to stop and turn around. I ignored it. "Wow" I said trying to act excited. We pulled up in the parking space and went in. The back porch had a big hole in it. The place was on the outside of the town. A man named Bernie came to the door. "Hello. Are you Brenda?" He asked my nana. "That's me" she said. I could read people's faces pretty good. And his had a concerned look. "We'll I'm Bernie and welcome to the Mayest House." He said ([***i am not gonna say the real name of the place for legal reasons***]) "thank you" nana said and we went in. "Your room will be right here" Bernie said pointing to a room just to our left. He lead us down to it. "Here you are" he said.

My head was spinning. 'Something is wrong here' I kept telling myself. When you opened the door your were in the bathroom. You had a very old fashioned toilet with a cord you had to pull to flush and an even older shower. Our room was through a door in the bathroom. It had no tv nor couch. It had a bed and chair with a fake fireplace. It was not dirty but it was not comforting. "If you follow me I will show you around" he said and walked us back to the front door. "Over here is the kitchen" he said walking to the right. "The glasses are in there and plates are here. Breakfast is served around 9 every morning and there are some really good places to eat in town for lunch and dinner. Here is your key and you two ladies just make yourself at home" he said handing a key to us. We thanked him and went back to our room.

Me and nana looked around. "No tv" she said . "Yep" we put our stuff up and went into the bathroom. "Look at this" nana said pointing to an old sink. "Cool". I didn't really care. I didn't like the place. We went back outside and locked our room. Bernie was no where and we went outside to the car. "So what do you think" she asked. I looked at her. "We'll.." I said. I could not disappoint her but I didn't want to stay there. "It's different" I said. She smiled and drove around he found a place to eat and went in. It was nice. It was a Mexican place. I had a taco and she had a fajita. When we were done eating it was around 5pm. "What do you want to do" she asked. I looked at her trying to think. "I don't know"

We paid for the food and left. "Do you really like the place?" She asked. I had to tell her. She already knew. "Not really." I said. "Why?" "Because... There is just something about it.... I can't explain it" I said. "Do you want to stay there?" She asked.

I just looked at her " I guess". The second I said that I wish I too it back. My red lights were going off all over the place. She drove off and back to the house. We went in and went to our room. I sat down on the bed and looked around. 'Lord, help me. ' I said in my mind. I took out my iPad to see if it had wifi. It did but there was a password. 'Great, now I got to find the router in this place' I thought. Nana walked to the bathroom. I heard the toilet flush. It was really noisy. She came back. "There ain't much to do here is there? But I got my laptop" she said and got it out. "Why won't Facebook work?" I laughed. Old people and technology. "The wifi has a password" " what is it" she asked. "I don't know. I have to find out" I played some games and made a video or two of how we were.

It seemed like forever until we went to bed. I crawled in next to her. "Good night" she said. "Night". She was asleep on no time, but I could not sleep. 'What is it' I asked myself. 'I swear if this place is haunted I will be exploring every room'. I looked around. The fireplace kicked on and I saw the room at night. There was defiantly something there.
