I was hoping that my amnesia was only temporary but I guess we don't always get what we want. The doctor gad told me that I would never recover my memories but that I could 'make new ones', whatever that meant. I couldn't remember any of my life until the point I woke up and the doctors still tried to get me to look on the bright side, of course.
They had also given me a sheet with all my general information. Only stuff like my address, name, age, medical history and emergency contact (who was someone called Aleksandr Marchant).
Even though I learnt some information about myself, I still didn't know who the good looking guy in the corner was. He was still asleep, he lightly snored and moved, but not very often.
The fucking hospital was boring as shit and some of the nurses could be snappy at times. I wanted out, fast. The doctor said I had to wait because I had to monitored. This meant they watched me like a bunch of creepy motherfuckers.
I wasn't allowed to do anything but watch TV. My boredom made me think about calling Aleksandr - my emergency contact, but I doubted they would let me use my phone. I had to have one come in with one unless I was in some form of wreck. There was no way I had been in a wreck as I was perfectly fine, other than the amnesia.
A low grumble coming from the other side of the room caught my attention. The grumble was followed by a loud yawn as the mystery man that was sleeping the chair began to stretch. Looking back on it I guess I was finally getting the company I was craving.
He looked up and squinted at the sun coming through the open window. After blinking a few times he glanced over in my direction. His eyes widened as he stared at me, he seemed to be in some sort of daze.
"You're awake.", the boy's words were spoken almost silently as a smile broke out onto his face.
"Yeah, and you are?", my speech was as cold as a December night. There was no reason for me to feel anger or upset towards him, I was just confused and infuriated at life.
Pain flashed through his eyes but it was quickly masked by fake joy. 'Why should he be upset when I was the one too lose my memory?', was the question that swam through my mind. I can now see that I was being ungrateful and in no way sympathetic or empathetic. It was selfish of me, he had lost something too, I can see that now. I was blinded by emotion and self pity when this was happening. It was a horrendous thing to only think about myself and not take others feelings into account.
"I'm Aleksandr Marchant but call me Aleks.", there was a significant change in the loudness of his voice.
"Oh yeah, you're my emergency contact.", I smiled as I recognised the name.
"Yeah. We're good friends.", the boy stated obviously knowing about the amnesia I was suffering from.
"What happened? Why am I like this?", the words fell from my tongue without thought.
"Uh... How about we just don't talk about it? It's over now?", tears were brought to his eyes and I decided not to press the subject (which was a good choice).
There was an uncomfortable silence between us. I didn't know him. Well I knew him, I just didn't remember him or anything about him. I guess neither of us knew what to talk about. The silence engulfed both of our bodies and latched onto us tightly.
After a while the silence became deafening and I had to break it or the tension would suffocate me.
"Can you maybe... Uh...", I began , nervous about upsetting him again.
"Can I maybe uh what?", Aleks asked with a chuckle.
"Can you tell me about myself?", the question rolled quickly off the tip of my tongue and it tasted of hope.
"Well what do you want to know?", the younger boy answered my question with another question and I fought myself trying not to roll my eyes and failing.
"Everything.", I found out that I did not have very much patience and I could be rather rude. My rudeness made him grin and laugh which was something I did not expect at all.
"Well, where to start?", and that was the beginning of what I would describe as a flawless friendship.
