Prologue ~ Darkness
~July 25, 2013~
~Niall's POV~
It all started when I opened my curtains this morning. It was raining and a strong wind went through the trees after my house. Soon the rumbling sound of thunder reached my ears. But that wasn't everything. That was the first time I felt the eyes on me. They were watching me. I knew it. I could feel them, but I saw nobody.
I just decided to shrug it off. I was still half asleep anyway. I walked downstairs and prepared myself for school. It was almost over and then I would be free from school. Exams ended last week and now all I had to do was cleaning up the classroom.
The day carried on slowly and the feeling of someone watching me didn't disappear. The feeling made me uncomfortable. It was as if I didn't have any privacy anymore and I hated it.
After school, me and some friends went clubbing to celebrate the end of another school year. I couldn't get drunk because I had to drive home alone. I have a car. An old car ready for the dump. It's a wonder that it even works.
It was already dark when I said goodbye to my friends and headed home. The shortest way was through the woods. I didn't want to drive for long seeing as I was tired as fuck and drank a bit, so I decided to take the shortcut. Bad mistake.
Here I am now. In the middle of the dark woods, with a car which broke down. I am yelling some very creative words to my car. I don't want to get out to see what's wrong. To be honest, I'm a bit scared of the dark and that feeling I had this morning still hasn't disappeared. What if someone was actually following me all night and sabotaged my car? What if that person is planning on killing me?
I try to start the car one more time. Of course without success. I sigh and grab the flashlight from under my seat. I flick it on and with one last deep breath, I get out of my car. Immediately the sounds of the woods at night surrounds me. I hear the cry of an owl in the distance. The small breeze makes the leaves from the bushes and trees rustle. Goosebumps spread over my skin.
"Don't be such a baby," I whisper to myself as I open the hood of my car. I shine the flashlight on the inside of the car and search for the problem. Suddenly something brushes against my legs and I jump. My head hits the hood and a loud scream leaves my mouth. Quickly I shine with the flashlight to the thing. I can only see a red tail disappear in the bushes. My breathing comes out in short quick pants.
"It was only a fox, there is nothing scary here," I whisper to encourage myself, but it's no use. My heart is beating really fast in my chest and I'm still panting. Then I look back to the motor of my car. I finally see the problem and smile. There is only a loose cable. I plug it in again and am about to close the hood when I hear a branch snap after me. I jump in fear once again and turn my head to the sound. Just as I'm about to point my flashlight to the place, the light disappears.
"No, don't give up now," I say, but it doesn't work. The light doesn't return and now I'm all alone in the dark. I can see the faint contours of the trees which are the closest to me. The moon is giving not enough light to see enough. Another branch snaps, this time closer to me. My heart rate speeds up till I'm afraid it will jump out of my chest soon.
"Who's there!" I yell through the air. After a minute nobody has answered me. I turn around again and lift up my hand to where I think the hood is. Finally, I find it and close it. I want to get away from here as fast as possible. I start walking to walk to the car door with one hand on the car, so I don't get lost here, but I then I freeze. I hear footsteps really close. They stop right behind me and I feel a warm breath in my neck. Then the person breaths in my ear and whispers. "Niall."
I scream and jolt forward, opening the car door as fast as possible and slamming it close. I start the car and to my relief, it actually listens to me. With a rattling sound, the motor comes to life again. I slam my foot on the gas pedal and drive away as fast as possible.
"What the fuck was that?" Is the question which is running through my mind as I drive home.
