Newt's POV

I pried open my eyes only to be greeted by a bright white light. I let my eyes adjust and I saw that I was laying on a bed. How did I get here? The last thing I remember is... Thomas shooting me because I was a Crank. What happened after that? It was all a blur.

"I see you're finally awake, Newton."

I propped myself up on my elbows and looked at the lady who entered the room. She had her brown hair up in a ponytail and a white lab coat on. She scribbled something down on a clipboard she was carrying.

"How do you feel?" She asked.

"How am I alive?"

She smiled softly. "That will all be explained to you soon, Newton. I just have to run a few more tests on you to see if you're nice and healthy, okay?"

I nodded, not really caring about the tests. She told me to sit up and then took out a syringe, she pierced it into my skin and extracted some of my blood. Next, she put me in a big scanner and looked at my brain waves, or so she said.

"Okay! You are nice and healthy now! Please follow me." She said kindly.

I followed her through the winding halls and then stopped in front of a door. She swiped her ID card and it buzzed open. She gestured for me to go inside. I slowly walked in and the door swished shut behind me. Inside the room was another woman with blonde hair sitting at a table.

"Sit down, Newton. I'm sure you have many questions." I sat down across from her, not letting my guard down.

I look around the room, there didn't seem to be any cameras, but there was a number pad on the wall and a small screen next to it.

"Where am I?" I asked.

"You're at a WICKED facility." She answered.

"How did I get here?"

"We picked you up from the Scorch. You were almost dead from the gunshot wound Thomas have you, but we wouldn't let you die, you are far to valuable to this experiment."

"What experiment?"

"I think you know I won't answer that."

I nodded. "Why am I not a Crank? I was thought I wasn't immune."

"We extracted an implant that we embedded in your brain. It made you seem like you were becoming a Crank. You never had the Flare, it was simply controlled by us." She said.

"But why? Why would you want me to pretend having the Flare?"

"It was an important variable in th tests. We wanted to see how the other boys reacted. More specifically to Thomas because-"

"Because he shot me, right?" I cut in.

"No, because he has certain feelings for you. These feelings of deep affection create a type of brain wave that we can study-"

"Wait, what? What do you mean by 'certain feelings' and 'deep affection'?" I interrupted again.

"Thomas is in love with you, Newton. And we know that you love him back. We had you pretend to have the Flare to study the brain waves of trust and heart break. It broke his heart when he shot you, and it broke his heart that you trusted him enough to ask him to do so."

Thomas loved me? I knew I had some feelings for him back in the Glade, but I thought it would never work out because he liked Teresa. I thought I got over him, too. I knew I still had feelings for Thomas, but I didn't know he returned the feeling.

"W-where are they?" I asked.

"They're at a facility nearby. We can contact them by calling if you want."

I nodded and the woman walked up to the pad on the wall. She pressed a few buttons and it began to beep.

"I'll give you some privacy." She smiled and walked out of the room.

All of a sudden, a voice came out of th pad on the wall. It was Thomas.

"H-hello? Who's this?"

I sat in disbelief for a moment. This was the boy I loved. And he loved me back. He thought I was dead, that he killed me. What would be the first thing I would say to him coming back from the dead?

"Name's Newt, Greenie."
