The men set me down like I was a sake of potato's in the corner of the room, turning their backs on me.
"You fools--you have to tie her up!" Ken commanded, the men quickly ran off in different directions to find something to bound me.
I didn't dare move--Ken had his eyes locked on me so tight I could scarcely breath. It took a matter of seconds for the men to return--and I was happy they did because that was the only thing that would have taken Ken's eyes off me--his cold eyes that looked as empty as space.
I didn't move as the men bound my hands behind my back--I didn't move as they bounded my feet. I couldn't. I was frozen--I was frozen like space.
Maybe Ken had the power to freeze people like I had the power to withstand the suns rays--maybe everyone had a special thing they could do. Finally I felt my body relax--maybe now I had time to think of someway out of this--some way I could save the humans--anything.
I climbed into a seating position, I didn't dare make any sudden movements--I knew that they would surely hear it and I would be back on their attention. That I didn't want.
As I sat there I moved my head around the room looking for something--anything that would spark an idea. That was when I saw Sam, still on the ground like a child's toy slumped over. I wanted to whisper "Sam." but I couldn't. The gag in my mouth was making it hard to breath and impossible to speak--which was what it had been placed in there for.
Mary, Ken and the others were all still taking rather loudly--they seemed to be arguing--but I didn't pay attention--I needed to somehow get Sam up to see if he was all right. He was a Taker--he couldn't die--not from that. Could he?
My body was shaking like a volcano as I waited--maybe he would get up? But maybe he never would again.
The voice from outside came again, "come out now and no one will get hurt." he sounded scared--all the towns police were babies--they wouldn't be able to stop them--no one could.
There was a 5 minute pause and then I herd a loud crash--they had kicked the door in. The men gathered around--creating a wall of muscle--there was no way anything could get through them.
There was so much noise from the door being broken down and from the police running down the halls I decided it was my chance to move.
Slowly I inched towards Sam--moving my butt across the floor in a scotching motion. Feet followed by butt followed by hands. He didn't show any sign of life.
Come on Sam I thought, but he didn't look up. His eyes were closed--his chest didn't move up or down with the inflating of his lungs.
And then, in a moment that seemed to be a miracle--his eyes opened. I looked at him, gesturing towards the gag in my mouth. He nodded moving his hand slowly and taking ahold of it. It felt so good to be able to breath freely again--but our task wasn't over. I turned my back to him so he could see that my hands were bound--his face contorted--he wasn't happy by this. His face turned as red as an apple, but I gave him a look telling him it was fine, and that we had to get out of this before we did anything rash. He seemed to understand and started working on the naught.
Mary and the men were still talking and waiting for the police to come through the door--they were getting ready to kill anything and everything.
I was surprised when my hands became un-tied and he started on my feet. He was using his teeth--I felt bad because I knew my feet weren't the best smelling in the world but somehow that seemed the least of the worries that had surfaced themselves in the past hour.
Finally I was un-tied--Sam smiled. "Done." He whispered, and as he did so I herd a "bark" come from the doorway--it was followed by the sound of cracking bones.
"I hate dogs." One of the men said in defense.
Ken looked at him--rage entering his face, "you idiot! When the dog doesn't come back they are going to send for more fucking cops." He said punching him in the arm hard. He toppled over, but got up soon after rubbing his arm.
"Sorry boss." He murmured.
"We can take them!" One of the other men said from the back, "it doesn't matter."
"If they have guns it matters." Ken retorted.
"Fucking guns." another said under his breath.
Now that I was free I didn't know what I could do--there was no way out and even if I did get out they would find me and use my blood to kill humans everywhere! If I could just become invisible--but I knew that was impossible. They would get my blood one way or another--but they needed me alive so they wouldn't harm me--that much was clear. I sat against the wall--Sam was watching me, but he didn't say anything.
I thought for a moment--my existance meant death for so many people......
"Rocket, Rocket!" A man called from the other room, and when the dog didn't walk on out I herd the police running down the hall.
The Takers were on gard, the cops were as good as dead---but it didn't have to be that way--nothing had to be this way.
Slowly I climbded to my feet--I didn't know why--but it felt right. Nothing I had been doing felt like it should have--but in that moment I felt like I had made the first step in a long line.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked--but I didn't answer--It was better this way. I moved forward.
I could see a small table to the side of the room it held several knifes and operating utensals. I moved fast--but somehow it all felt like slow motion to me, gripping the largest, shaprpest knife in my left hand I walked towards the group of Takers--they didn't pay me any mind.
The police barged in the room--I smiled--they were fully equipt with automatic guns and bullet proof vests. The Takers were fast to react and start towards the police--but I was faster.
I ran--I ran towards one of the police my knife held out in front of my chest. This was the way it had to end. If I lived--the world would surely die--if I died the world would go on--millions of people for my one life--or just me. I chose me.
The police had quick relexes--but he seemed slow--everything seemed slow. Sam screamed something, but I didn't hear it. I didn't feel a thing--I herd the shot go off--I saw it coming towards my chest--I herd Mary scream for the Takers to stop the police--but then--just like that--I saw nothing at all.
