Draco took Harry's hand in his own. They walked together to the great hall for lunch. As soon as they were approaching the large entry way to the great hall Draco squeezed Harry's hand tighter. Draco wasn't sure how Snape would react to Draco holding the-chosen-one's hand. He didn't know how anyone would react. He tried to tell himself that he didn't care but deep down he did. He wanted to show everyone that he could be trusted and that he could be good enough for Harry. He needed to prove it tom himself more than anyone.
For the hundredth time that day Draco was back at the top of the astronomy tower. His wand pointed at a disarmed Dumbledore. Do it Draco He could hear his aunt Bellatrix in his ear. Kill him Draco. NO. He felt Harry's hand in his own. If Harry could live 16 years with a part of Voldemort's soul in his own and not be evil, then Draco surely could fight what his family taught him. What he was always told- what he believed was real.
As they entered the hall, hand in hand, everyone stared at them. There were a few students scattered around each table. Some began whispering and giggling, a few scowled but Harry and Draco didn't care what the student's thought. Their attention was on their professors. All the staff sitting at the head table looked up when the two entered the hall. McGonagall looked pleased as a kind smile spread across her face. Flitwick transferred a handful of coins into her palm. Hagrid who had been completely oblivious to the whispers in the halls of Hogwarts, was the only one who looked properly shocked. Professor Sprout leaned over to whisper something to Trelawny. Even Hagrid who eventually figured it out, seemed happy for the two boys. All seemed to accept it, all except on beloved potions professor.
Snape scowled at the two boys. The look of disgrace and hatred on Snape's face said it all. His face said everything Draco was thinking. How dare you think yourself a proper match for Harry Potter. How dare you. when you had a hand in attempting to destroy the wizarding world and Harry had to fix it. You're a Death Eather. You'll never be good enough. Draco couldn't take it. He turned tail and ran from the hall to his dormitory. Harry scanned the staff table looking for what had unraveled his boyfriend.
Boyfriend. That's different. I like it. I really like the sound of that. Harry thought.
Harry was yanked from his thoughts when black robes billowed past him, practically knocking him over. Snape had jumped to his feet when Draco ran out and was now all but running out of the hall after him. The professor disappeared into the castle. All the commotion died down and now the whole Hall was watching Potter. The pressure of all the eyes felt bareable with Draco at his side.
"Nothing to see here." Harry announced to the spectators as he sat down and grabbed a piece of toast.
Draco was crying on his bed his face in his pillow. He was still sobbing when Snape entered the room. He sat at the foot of Draco's bed. Draco tried to wipe away the tears.
I can't cry in front of him. Not again. Be strong you coward. Be strong. Draco told himself in his head.
"Draco..." Snape began but he wasn't sure how to continue. He wasn't mad. He was a bit disappointed not because Draco was dating a boy. He didn't care. It was that he was dating a Potter. Severus knew that he shouldn't feel disappointed, but he still felt terrible for how he had treated Harry all throughout his schooling. Harry had his mother's eyes. He was another reminder of how horribly he had failed at everything. He was a reminder of why he was stuck becoming a teacher when it wasn't what he had ever wanted to do. Harry Potter was a reminder that he would never get to be with the love of his life. It was easier to avoid facing his mistakes when Draco wasn't holding hands with Potter. And as much as he hated to admit it to himself, he was jealous of Draco. He got Potter and Severus would never get Lily.
"Why do you hate him? Draco sat up. His eyes begging for the true answer.
"I don't hate Potter if that's what you're so concerned about." Snape said. "I hated his father yes... And I took it out on the boy... yes. But I don't hate him." Snape rolled his eyes. Draco prodded for a better explanation. Snape reluctantly told Draco about his time as a student at Hogwarts. He told him about everything. Everything except the fact that he was or had been in love with Lily Evans. Or that he had called her a mudblood and ruined their friendship.
Draco and Snape talked for the rest of the evening and long into the night. Harry had joined them a little later wanting to check on his Slytherin prince. They talked about subjects that usually bored Severus like quidditch and brooms. Snape wasn't one for flying he preferred apporating. Although he would rather have an intelligent conversation, he enjoyed having time with his Godson and Potter. A time when he didn't have to lie to the boys. They were practically adults now anyway. Harry. like Draco, had a lot of questions about his parents, the first
The three ended the night in laughs and smiles. Harry had never seen the kind and compassionate side of Snape and he liked it a lot better than the cruel side.
Snape had decided around one am to retire to bed. He kissed Draco on the top of his blonde head and said good-bye to the pair. Once Snape left the two fell onto the bed and cuddled in silence. Harry wrapped his arms around Draco's waist and rested his head on Draco's chest. Draco wrapped one arm around the other boys shoulder and held Harry's hand with the other.
The both of them eventually fell asleep still holding onto each other. For the first time since his father had escaped, Draco wasn't visited by any nightmares.
Harry woke up early the next morning to an empty bed. A note was left on the bedside table that read:
Harry,
I left to Hogsmead to do some Last minute Christmas shopping. I might go to Diagon Alley as well.
With love, DracoHarry checked his watch and sighed. It was almost noon. He gt dressed and walked around Hogwarts. It was beautiful at this time of year.
