Shailene. . .
I wake up and look at the time on the dashboard. Its eight in the morning. I look to my right. I come face to face with Ansel.
He smiles at me though his eyes are bloodshot and tired. The events of last night hit me like a wave and I am forced to look away.
Ansel. . .
"Are you okay?" I ask Shai as she just curls up in a ball. "Are you cold or something?"
"No, I'm fine." She replies.
"Okay." I say and shrug.
I stop in front of a hotel. "I'm gonna get two rooms here for tonight, I checked online, its not fully booked so we can get two different rooms."
"Okay." Shai says.
We pull up in the carpark of the hotel and I pull the keys out, cutting off the engine.
-
I unpack and pull out a picture from my pocket, the one with Violetta and Galo.
I got a call from Sophie, my sister last night, she had said my dog, Galo passed away. I've had that dog since I was a kid. I want to go home and see Galo, but I don't want to leave Shai alone. I want her to be happy. Afterall, she is nice enough to organize a whole roadtrip for me.
I grab some change and get behind the door of the bathroom.
Shailene. . .
Once I'm changed,I take a deep breathe and look in the mirror. I open th balcony windows to taste the fresh air.
Today will be a long day. I can't see Ansel without telling myself I can't have him the way I want. He's always been my little nugget.
I've liked him since I first met him and after our friendship grew to more than just friends. He saw me in a different light that I wasn't ready to see him in yet. He broke up with Violetta because of me and now here I am, wanting to be his, but he doesn't want me anymore. It doesn't work anymore.
I exit my room and knock on Ansel's room door. He opens it.
He hugs me immediatly which feels nice and I close my eyes to really feel his hug. I don't want him to let me go but he eventually does.
"What are we going to do today?" I ask him.
He shrugs. "We rest today. You know, watch movies and eat."
We go inside and he picks up the phone and orders room service. I search in Ansel's luggage for a movie. I pick Charlie and The Chocolate Factory because it is personally my favorite. I insert it in the plyer and turn on the TV. Ansel puts down the phone and gets on the bed, I curl up beside him.
-
Halfway through the movie, the door bell rings and I collect our food and set it between me and Ansel. He ordered injera. Its an Arabian version of pancakes.
Me and Ansel share the food while watching the movie. I only watch a little, when the Oompa Lumpas came on. The rest of the time, I watch Ansel, he's adorable, he just doesn't know it yet. I like his laugh everytime they do something ridiculous in the movie like when Charlie touched the ceiling. Its deep and familiar. I cuddle into him deeper, feeling his warmth.
-
That night, Ansel slips back into his room. I get a sudden knock on my room door. I open the door.
"Ms Woodley?" A hotel staff asks.
"Yes." I reply.
"You've got a phone call."
"Oh."
"Yes, please come down to the reception."
"Of course." I say, feeling a bit worried. This must be urgent.
-
I hold the hotel reception phone to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Ah Shailene." A low voice with a british accent accent acknowledges me and I place it as Theo's.
"Hi Theo."
"I called your cellphone, no one picked up."
"Its dead." I say. "And I forgot to bring my charger."
"Oh. Well, something happened."
"What is it?" I ask quickly.
"I broke up with my fiancé."
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Theo."
"Its alright. We decided it was for the best... because I really fancy you Shailene."
"I like you too Theo, as a good friend."
"No I mean I really fancy you. I was just wondering... if you would like to be my girlfriend. Ruth okay with it, I confirmed with her and she said it was for the best. I can't love you and date her."
"Oh. Well." I say a bit too overwhelmed. Then something hit me. I really like Ansel, but he'll never love me back. Theo, here though, does and maybe he can fill the void Ansel left. A hundred flashbacks are running in my head. "I love you as a friend." is on repeat in my head. Everytime he mourned for Violetta. Everytime he said he was ready, but he isn't Ansel isn't ready to love me.
"Shailene?" Theo calls, breaking me away from my thoughts
"Oh um." I say very quietly. "Yes." I whisper then confirm it louder. "Yes I will.
"Yes." I hear Theo repeat me over the phone, comprehending my words. "I love you so much, Shailene." He then says.
"I love you too, see you when I get back." I put the phone back down and thank the receptionist before making my way back to the room.
[AN] I'm sorry I had to write this about Galo, God forbid it. I love Galo and think he is wonderful and makes Ansel so happy.
