Chapter 18 (Hazy rosi Golan—trip home)

I gaze out into the city. We are late to check out, but I don't want to leave.

The view is gorgeous and I know I will miss the adventure the city promised. Going home would be a drag. One reason including the long trip, and then facing my father.

I hadn't warned him about this trip beforehand. Sure the government knows, but I doubt they inform my father about such miniscule incidents.

Maybe he is oblivious to my entire absence. I sigh and regard the city carefully from the window.

"You ready?" I ask Sevastyan and stick on my winter hat.

He gives me a curt nod and stares longingly into the city. At least I know he feels the loss too.

"How about one last walk in the park," I brighten at my idea. He doesn't answer, but I had already decided. I want to go to the park, and we will go.

I shiver at the chilly air, and wrap my arms around myself as we step into the cold. We stroll down the city streets to the main square. Confetti flies around the grounds from yesterday's bonfire, and small groups huddle together for warmth. Children play in the grass and I sigh at the beauty of it all.

Ribbons color the leafless trees and the the ice skating rink holds only a few stragglers.

I may not have brought joy to Sevastyan through skating, but I am sure I showed him something about humanity; about how we celebrate together, and how we come together during the holidays.

My eyes widen as Sevastyan steps in front of me, and then takes another and another. He walks away from me and I stand rooted to the ground. Dragging my feet from my spot, I stumble after him.

"Where are you going?" I stutter. He stops suddenly and I trip over my own feet.

I regain my balance and wait for his answer.

"How about ice skating?" my heart stops at his words, and I gasp for a breath.

I try to end the fluttering, and to hide my excitement, but that isn't going to happen. I grin ear to ear and nod quickly.

"I'll go get the skates!" I jump up and rush over do just that.

My breathing becomes shallow from my eagerness. He agreed. He agreed to do something fun. Something fun with me!

Tears prick at my eyes from happiness. I made a difference.

I feign tranquility as I march over to him and mentally prepare to go ice skating with him.

We stumble onto the ice and I wait patiently for him. Honestly, my whole being is filled with joy and hope. I really could do anything I set my mind too.

I am going ice skating with a different species.

How crazy is that!

Sevastyan steps onto the ice and I immediately take his rough hand.

Unlike me, he doesn't slide around as easily. He also appeared too large to be held up by the blades, but anything is possible.

I giggle as he takes a step and then I drag him to the middle of the rink.

He warily looks around. My jitters were too much for me and I skate away to calm myself. My smile doesn't fall, even when he stands motionless. He wouldn't move without me, which I find adorable.
