"All things are difficult before they are easy."-Thomas Fuller
Chapter 21 Day 26
I wake up late. Later than I have ever woken up.
I smooth each frizz meticulous into my bun before trudging out my door.
Sevastyan hands me my coffee wordlessly as I enter the kitchen.
Yesterday's events plague my mind, and the thoughts pound into my head. My stomach cramps periodically as I sip my coffee. My day is not starting out well, and I know Sevastyan could tell. Negativity is not an appealing trait on me.
I check the time and sigh.
"We should head out to the animal shelter," I groan.
"Maybe it's best to stay in today," he says casually.
"No no, I told her I would," I convince myself, thinking of Rebecca.
"Today's not a good day to leave your home," Sevastyan replies ominously. I ignore his peculiar attitude and drag him out the front door anyways. The animal shelter is a few blocks away, and the walk clears my head of some of the ruckus and stress weighing down on me.
"Hello," I smile brilliantly at Rebecca from behind.
"Oh! You're here," she spins around and laughs. "Good, let's start by feeding them."
We immediately get to work. The animals are wild the entire time, and feeding eventually becomes a difficult task.
"They've been like this for a few days . . ." Rebecca trails off as we step outside for a breath of fresh air.
We both required a break from the animals; Rebecca was also a bit disappointed at Sevastyan's lack of 'super-secret animal speak skills.'
"No wonder you asked for help," I turn away sheepishly. Her job is more challenging that I gave her credit for.
"Yeah, like two nights ago they went ape on me, I swear," she went on dramatically.
"Really?" I question. Two nights ago was the human attack.
"It's like the animals are getting possessed or something. Like it's been happening sporadically for the pass day in a half," she pouts, "I'm losing my touch."
My gaze shifts up as I see the clouds forming.
"Adriana? Did you hear me?"
"What?" I blink back at Rebecca.
"I said," she chuckles, "I am now neither good at math nor animals. I have, like, no talent now!"
"No, you are perfect. Just the way you are," I beam at her before we return to work.
"You still feeling alright?" Sevastyan crouches next to me as I struggle with feeding a bird.
"Yeah. I'm alright," I trail off. Another wave of cramps strikes my stomach and I smile awkwardly as I finish feeding the flying fiend.
A cat from my right suddenly goes crazy and slams into the cage bars. Forgetting my pain I roll onto my feet and watch in horror as the kitten runs head first into the door. I swivel around for a professional and begin to panic when I spot blood rushing from the cat's head and no professional in sight.
"Sevastyan, get Rebecca! We have to—"
Before I finish my statement the cage door is ripped open and the cat scurries out.
