Chpt 4 Sit, and Stay.
"Father?" I question, not understanding. "What are you implying?"
How could I believe this? He reads the disbelief across my face.
"No," his jaw clenches, "regrettably this is true."
"But-that is against the law; a flurry of laws!" I pounce to my feet. "His Excellency cannot do that!"
"Yes, Adrianna," he says, "he can."
"And you are allowing this? You called it a Detritus yesterday! And you expect me to live with it?" I gulp.
Is he serious?
"Next time, think; before you bring up an illegal subject," he yells, "in my office!"
"Father," I sooth apologetically, "you cannot expect me to believe this, can you?"
The idea is ludicrous.
Would the government compromise my father this way? He will worry for me, and that could mess with his work. His entire career relies on me if I am stuck with th
"Adrianna," he sucks in a deep breath. "I am not joking. I am sorry, honey. I only want what is best for you. You are a grown woman now, I know that. I have to allow you to handle this," he swallows. "Country's orders."
I gasp in horror. This is outrageous. Completely unbelievable.
"Does mum know what is going on?" I push the loose hair from my face and rest my hands on the back of my head. My heart flutters relentlessly and I remind myself to breath: to calm down and think.
He nods dejectedly
I close my eyes to shut out the world.
Slowly, I ask, "I am on my own now, aren't I?"
Silence.
I lick my dry lips and crack open my eyes. "I will be going then," I say calmly.
"Wait, Adrianna! It will happen tomorrow. There will be a briefing for you," he rushes.
"I am busy tomorrow," I excuse desperately.
"Well get un-busy," came his snarky response.
"Easier said than done, Father," my hand runs through my hair once more. "It is Thursday tomorrow. You know how busy I am on Thursdays."
"The monster will be yours tomorrow, before you leave for the night," he explains.
"And I just leave It alone, in our community? Right after you release It from that electric cage? Are you
out of your mind?" I interrogate.
"Then take It with you."
"No way! You know that is impossible," I snap.
"Then secure It in your apartment for the time."
That moment is when my heart stops, and my breathing falters. That moment is when I truly comprehend the fate I conceded too. I release a slow breath.
"I will be living with It?" the question is emotionless, and I could feel the color drain from my face.
"Yes."
----
I tie up my adventure boots the next morning and secure on my lucky necklace.
I will play out this day like any other.
