"When I say run, you run." He said, never averting his gaze from the minotaur.
Instinctively I grabbed him from behind."promise you'll be behind me."
I pressed my face against his back. I could feel his heart beat racing, probably from fear. I hugged him tighter. He touched my hands causing my heart to skip a beat.
"I promise, turn around do you see the smoke in the forest rising above the trees?"He asked.
I turned and found the smoke rising from the trees on the left.
I turned back around,"yes."
"Run towards that direction, don't run elsewhere, I'll be behind you. Ready?" I nodded against his back, hugging him one last time.
"Go!" He shouted. I turned and ran in that direction, not looking back because if I had then I probably would have reconsidered leaving him. I jumped over a log on the side of the road, running as fast as I could towards the forest. I heard a roar from outside, forcing myself to keep running.
Be careful, idiot. I prayed to Ares the god of war, my brother, and my sister, Athena, the goddess of warfare and strategies.
I jumped over logs and almost tripped over a couple of tangled weeds. I ran as fast as I could towards the smoke I could see it coming closer. My fear was slowly consuming me, but in a good way I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins. My luck ran out and I rolled down a small hill. I had jumped over another larger log not realizing that it might not have any even ground on the other side. I gather myself quickly, I looked for the smoke when the adrenaline turned to fear. I couldn't see it. I heard another roar and this time closer.
No no no no no.
"C***" I turned around hoping to see the smoke beyond the trees but I couldn't they where too tall.
"Oh god, what am I going to do." I thought about what Diavolo had said.
"Run"
I can't give up, I just can't... At least not yet.I stood up and looked up, from where I had rolled down, I saw a long thin tangled vine that had fallen I followed the source of the vine. It was attached to the large log! Perhaps my luck hadn't completely run out.
I took a couple of steps back.
I can do this... I can't give up.
I ran towards the vine as fast as my legs could go and with all my might, I jumped and grabbed onto the vine.
Breathing heavily, heart racing, I placed my feet on the slope of the hill and climbed. I slipped a couple of times but I managed to reach the top. I placed my hand on the branch of the log and hoisted myself up. I grabbed the branch with my other hand and swung my feet on the log so I was straddling the log, tired from the energy spent I rolled over the log and collapsed on the other side.
Roooaaaar
I heard the sound so clearly as if the minotaur was merely 20 feet away.
No that can't be Diavolo is fighting it.
An image of Diavolo in the hands of the Minotaur flashed in my head. His body was limp and pale.
No no no no no no
ROOOAAAAR
This time it was louder... and much closer
