ATHENA'S P.O.V
I'm just going to start out by saying that being the daughter of the town's leader sucks. You see, the world fell apart about fifteen years ago...
i'm the only one around my age that can remember what happened the day the world fell apart.
It forced us to separate into these so called
'towns'
but they're really more like camps than towns.
So being of quite some importance requires me to be responsible for not only myself, but in a few years time the whole town/camp,
or so my father says.
There is a lot of pressure being put on me, and on top of that we are starting to run out of water.
Fast.
I am now on my way to discus the topic with my father and some people that help him make decisions.
The gravel was crunching under my boots as I inched closer to the hut that held his office; told you it wasn't a town.
As the hut came into view I nodded to the guard holding a gun who then nodded at me and let me inside.
We have never actually been attacked by anyone before, but in the world we live in, you can never say never.
When I walk into the room there was a big table in the middle, with people standing around it pointing at some type of map.
I go and join the circle of people, watching my father intently as he murmured to himself staring at the map.
"What did I miss?" I spoke up seeing as no one was acknowledging me. My father picked his head up and looked at me with an emotionless face.
"Planning." My father said flatly.
He does that a lot when he's stressed or confused. I don't know why, but he doesn't really like to show emotion.
He never used to be like that though. He used to be happy all the time when I was little....
When we had our own house....
When we didn't have to worry about anything...
When the world was normal...
When mum was still alive.
"What are we planning for?" I questioned further, furrowing my eyebrows, mirroring my dad.
My father sighed and straightened up a bit.
"As you know, the seasons are becoming dryer and dryer each year and we are running out of water faster than we had anticipated," I nodded gesturing for him to continue.
"Well, soon the lake is going to run out of water and the town is going to die of dehydration if we don't do something." I hung onto every one of his words as he spoke, taking in the seriousness of the situation.
"So what do you suppose we do?" A lady next to me said cutting into our conversation.
I hadn't even noticed that the whole room was now silent and listening to us.
"There is really only one thing we can do," He started.
"We have to leave town,"
don't you mean camp?!
"And head closer to the main river where it flows from the falls near Camp Bemjeck." He finished.
I really don't know why my father calls the camp a town. He calls all the other camps, camps. I guess it's because we happen to be one of the biggest camps around so he feels the need to call us a town? I don't think it matters so I never really question him about it.
The room was filled with many different emotions, most of them were shocked including my own.
"Sir, with all due respect... you cant just go moving around 300 people out into the open without even knowing exactly where your going, its insane." I stated.
"I know that Athena, and that's why I have come up with the plan to send a small group of people out to look for a safe place for us to stay." He said.
"Da- I mean Sir, no one is going to volunteer for that, you know that." And I was right no one in their right mind would, and he knew it too. "I know that" he sighed. "But it has to be done."
What was he thinking?
"How are you planning to get it done if no one is going to volunteer?" Another person from the back questioned.
"Now, I know this might sound a bit stupid and risky, but its the only choice we have,"
Stop stalling dad, and get to the point already.
"We are going to put all the names of the people in the camp over 17 years old into a box and draw out 5... and those names we pull out are the people that are going to go."
He's right, that does sound stupid.
And risky.
But most of all, that is fricken suicide!
Even when forced they're still not going to go!
