Chapter-2: The Heart Of The Eyes

Human brains have the capability to join together pieces of resemblances and create infinite images of a multitude of memories. This is where Adriana was lost. In her memories, fantasies and imagination.

When she was younger, Adriana used to make her mother sit with her on a clear night on the backyard. Together they used to uncover constellations and discover many of their own. She was always excited during these sessions. Always fascinated at her capability of conjuring different figures.

One day I am going to go to those stars and bring one for you mother! She remembered saying.

Alas, those nights were long before. No more did they exist. Her mother was a great deal busier now. And a great deal stricter.

Her own time shortened as she grew longer and soon she lost the power of imagination. She became mechanical like robots. Logarithm, zoology and following routines became her area of expertise.

In her nightly outings, she often regretted losing such a gift. Now, she couldn't find a single constellation on her own and that frustrated her.

What's happening? I seem to have lost control. How long has it been? It seems like infinity.

For Adriana, the world reduced to eyes. Expanded into infinity.

Adriana? Adriana!?
The shout broke her trance. She phased in again to the present and felt a dull pain in her forehead. Her hands moved to the spot and massaged it. 'Strong hands' were no longer holding her she noticed. When she lifted her head, she felt a pang of remorse. The eyes were gone too.

Who was he? I must know! Today is a very weird day and its getting weirder every moment. I need to go home. I need to go home.

Adriana analysed her surroundings. She was sitting on the nearest seat to the exit door. Alec and Kim were kneeling in front of the chair. There was stranger standing next to the chair. The auditorium was otherwise deserted.

Kim was Adriana's 'soulmate' once. But she kept her distance from her when she had an anxiety attack in the eight standard and cried non stop for one period.

I can't be best friends with freaks. Sorry Adriana. She had said the next day at school.

What is she doing here? Dark thoughts crossed Adriana's mind as she thought of her last words.

Oh thank god you are alive! I thought you got into fricking coma! Alec blurted out as he saw her move.

How long have I been like this? Adriana asked while trying to get up.

Not much. Just a few minutes. You passed out near the door. Sebastian picked you up and brought you here to this chair and its been like two minutes since then. Kim answered this time and stood up.

Adriana just nodded her head and got up. Alec followed and said,
You ought to be more careful while walking. Your backpack saved you or you could have ended up with a broken spine.

Hmm. Sorry. Adriana now observed the other boy by their side. He was just standing there gazing at her with his blue blue eyes.

So he is Sebastian. She concluded.

She now noticed his face for the first time. It was wide and a little oval. A pointed chin, flattish cheeks and high cheekbones enshrined a sharp face. Even sharper was his blue gaze which had the intensity of a gale within. His hair was a messy mass of blonde.
He had a tall frame. A mature confidence radiated from his visage.
That was the face behind the eyes.

Adriana listened to a flickering heart. It was her own. She didn't understand the feeling.

Am I sick? Is this the early signs of arteriosclerosis? She asked herself. But she already knew the answer.

All of them left together. They talked and laughed on the way. Kim asked Adriana for forgiveness. And Adriana, kind as she was, forgave her.

We were small and immature then. It is only obvious for a girl to act like that. She is innocent.

She even managed to have a short conversation with Sebastian while asking him where he lived. She heard his voice then and in it she could find small trebles and deep troughs.

A voice of a man.

She thought about her present. She had been aloof just a few minutes ago and now she had with her a boy, with hazel eyes, she scarcely knew, a once lost friend, a stranger, a bump on her forehead and a warm feeling in her insides.

I am happy! She exclaimed in her mind.

Eventually Kim's house came and she bid everyone good bye. She hugged Adriana tightly, warmly and apologised once again. Then she jabbed Alec in the ribs.

Finally, she caught Sebastian by his waist as he did the same and they kissed.

A cracking sound filled Adriana's ears. Was it her heart again? Her eyes closed shut and she wished for the sight to go away. To vanish. To disappear. To fade. But when she opened her eyes again, they were there kissing. He was there kissing.
