“Is this it?” Kae breathed into his earpiece.
“Yes, my lord!” Skylar’s familiar voice came back. “Oh! Kurwa! I meant to say sir!”
Kae in the mean time turned to his right to face Crash, who rolled his eyes as Skylar lamely corrected himself. Kae gave him a quick grin.
“Zephyr, your turn.” Kae spoke into his earpiece.
“Affirmative,” came the hushed reply, in a female’s voice.
Zephyr, another member of Kae’s team, came out from behind her cover of a tree. Her long silver hair flowed from underneath her titanium black battle-mask which covered her entire face. She crouched low on the ground and seemed to be waiting for something. After a few moments had passed, she seemingly began to melt into her surroundings. Camouflaged and invisible to the naked eye, only the footprints in the snow betrayed Zephyr's position as she made her way to the mouth of the cave.
After a few moments, a small, circular gadget floated in the air and nestled itself on the ground, just before the mouth of the cave.
“T minus ten seconds.” Zephyr radioed Kae.
“Roger that. Team, brace yourselves.” Kae ordered his team.
All of them readied themselves. Kae aimed his gun towards the entrance of the cave. Crash tightened his grip around his sword’s hilt, which hung in its sheath behind his waist. Zephyr became visible again as she took cover behind a large tree, the dark brown bark now starkly contrasted her white camouflage. She knocked an arrow on her bow, before she disappeared againinto the tree. Cross and Skylar equipped themselves with kunais.
A red light blinked on the gadget as it came to life. A cylindrical extension jutted out from the base. After nine blinks of the red light, the gadget emanated a low deep pulse which spread out over a large radius.
After a few moments a deep rumbling came from within the cave. The rumbling soon metamorphosed into erratic, out of sync, footsteps and was accompanied by a slow, strained wail of agony. Judging by the sound, whatever was running was massive and about to surface. Everyone prepared themselves for a pre-emptive strike.
Kae poised his gun, ready to pull the trigger at any given second. All of a sudden, the crescendo of the footsteps stopped and nothing but silence greeted them.
“What the heck just happened?” Crash said out loud, concern and confusion colouring his voice.
“Silence! Foc-” Kae began to reply back but stopped short when he saw a black tentacle protruding from Crash’s abdomen. Time seemed to slow down to one breath at a time. Green fluid mixed with Crash’s blood dripped to the floor and tainted the snow.
Crash looked down, saw the tentacle and slowly turned to face Kae. The last thing Kae saw was the shock in Crash’s eyes before the tentacle hurled him through the air towards the cave’s wall with inhumane force. The impact of Crash's body against the wall gave off a sickening crack of bones being broken which echoed through the air. The body clung to the wall for what seemed like a few seconds. Eventually, Crash's body gave way, leaving behind a bloody imprint. His body hit the floor with a muffled thud, lifeless.
