Love or Duty

I spent weeks pouring over papers, sitting in Council meetings, trying everything I could to eradicate the High Sparrow. Theon attended me and tried to help as much as he could. I was still wary of my husband, for I did not know where his intentions stood. Did he love me or my title?

My lessons with Jojen were cut shorter and shorter to make more time for helping my parents deal with the new threat. Jojen understood for the most part. He did, however, express concerns for my health. I wasn't eating or sleeping much and it was starting to show.

One morning I stumbled out of bed and barely made it to the chamber pot before heaving up the contents of my stomach. Theon tried to comfort me as best he could before he left and called the Maester.

My mother entered with the Maester. She took one look at me and she knew. I didn't need the Maester to tell me. I was pregnant.

"I didn't expect you to be pregnant so soon! How long has it been since you two married?" Queen Isabel teased. She wasn't wrong. Theon and I had been together more than once since our wedding night, but I had also been with Jojen. I felt so ashamed. Only whores and peasants don't know their own children's father. I knew this madness had to stop, but I loved Jojen and Theon was my husband.

My mother kissed me on the cheek and hugged Theon before escorting the Maester out and leaving Theon and I alone. I turned to face him, expecting to see fear or anger or disgust, but instead I saw tears.

"I can't believe it," he whispered. "A child of my own..."

"I don't mean to offend, but is this your first child? I - I've just heard stories." His reaction surprised me. Everyone said Theon would fuck anything that breathed, so why is he acting so strangely about my pregnancy?

"I was careful, Lehna. Nothing good can come from bastards," he said bitterly. "But I am so happy that we are having a child." He kissed my nose and lightly placed a hand on my stomach.

"Would you like to send a raven to your family?" I asked.

"Maybe my father will finally be proud of me," he muttered.

I kissed his cheek. "I need to get back to my parents. You may join us in the Hand's Tower when you are ready."

I immediately hurried to Jojen's room. The spellbook had been wrong apparently. He needed to know, especially since there was a chance my child was his.

I pushed open the door and there he was, the blonde boy that changed my life. He was just getting out of bed, his bare back facing me. He turned when he heard the door open and the most radiant smile passed his features. "Princess, you look absolutely lovely today," Jojen rose to give me a kiss. "To what do I owe this visit?"

"Jojen," I took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant."

"But I thought you said witches were infertile?"

"That's what the spellbook said, but right now that's the least of our worries. The baby could be yours or Theon's, I don't know!" Jojen hugged me close.

"Lehna, it's mine," he whispered.

"How do you know? Is there some kind of spell?" I was confused at how he could possibly know the father of my baby.

He sighed and motioned for us to sit. "I was present at your consummation," he admitted. "Though it broke my heart to be there I wanted to make sure you were safe with that heartless savage. I - I put a spell on you so that he couldn't get you pregnant.....ever..."

I stiffened. "You had no right." My voice was cold. "You didn't even bother to ask me. This is my body, Jojen. Undo the spell," I demanded.

"Why does it matter now? You're already pregnant-"

"NOW!" I shouted, finally losing my temper. "If you don't undo the spell I will make sure the High Sparrow gets what he wants."

"Surely you don't mean that, " Jojen tried to put his arm around me but I shrugged it off. I saw a knife on the table and I grabbed it.

"Undo it," I seethed. Jojen said the words reluctantly. "From this point on you are my teacher and nothing more. If you reveal my child's true paternity to anyone I will kill you. Goodbye, Lord Reed." I slammed the doors shut behind me.
