Mr. Buckley, who always liked to stop and chat, gave me a head nod as I passed by. He was one of the more intimidating teachers, but I guess even he wasn't going to try talking to me. Not that I blamed him. It was pretty obvious to everyone around me that I was in a mood.
I knew what a jerk I was being, but soon she'd realize that it's all for the best. I'm not the guy she needs. I can't make her happy. She's so beautiful and perfectly flawed. She deserves someone who can give her more than I can. She deserves someone who can protect her and provide for her. Not a guy with lung damage. Not a guy who's overcoming depression. Not a guy that can't buy her anything she could ever want. Lord only knows how much I wish I was that guy, but sadly I'm not. She's the kind of girl a guy could never forget, but as long as she's happy, it'll be bearable.
I was walking by the cafeteria when my walkie talkie went off. "Fight in Library. One unconscious." With a groan, I took off running. This was going to be a lot of paperwork.
By the time I reached the library, the fight was already broken up. Just a couple of bloody kids. I was about to ask who got knocked out when I saw the swarm of people all crowed around the corner. I pulled out my walkie talkie. "Sean and Damon, bring the two kids to the nurse then escort them to Headmistress."
I walked to the huddle of people. "Everyone back up now." I didn't have to raise my voice, everyone immediately stepped back giving me the space I needed.
I tried to keep my eyes from widening as I caught sight of Izzy laying there on the floor but I know that I failed miserably. Carefully, but quickly, I picked her up into my arms and headed out of the library. Lucas, who I hadn't noticed was there, was immediately by my side. "What happened?"
"Bella and I had went to the library. We were leaving, and when she rounded the corner, one of the guys pulled their arm back to punch. Basically, she just got hit and dropped."
"That little son of a bitch is about to figure out what happens when you hit a girl on my watch," I muttered under my breath.
"Run ahead and make sure the nurse has a cold washcloth and an ice pack waiting for us when he get there." With a nod, Lucas took off running in the direction of the nurse's office.
Izzy must have begun to wake up because she groaned and placed her hand over her eye, which was already starting to turn purple. "Shh, baby. We're almost there." I kissed her forehead.
The nurse's office was one big room divided by curtains to make six smaller rooms for patients with a hallway down the middle. At the end there was a door that lead to the nurse's office.
When I walked in the door, Lucas was standing there waiting for me. He led me to an empty room. I gently laid Izzy down and placed the washcloth over her forehead. I took the ice pack from Lucas and placed it on her eye to try and get some of the swelling to go down.
While Lucas was in search of the nurse, Izzy slowly began to regain consciousness. "Why the hell do I have an iceberg on my face?"
"Cause we're playing titanic. You can be the iceberg and I'll go down," Lucas said from behind me.
I tried to remember why I liked Lucas in the first place and I was just coming up empty. Had he always been this flirty with Izzy? You'd think I'd notice something like that. That is if I hadn't been avoiding her for the past week.
"Where's the nurse?" I asked.
"Down the hall." He took a seat in the chair on the other side of the bed. "She should be here in just a second."
