"IN LINE NOW!" I winced at the menacing bark that greeted me as I entered the gym, and adjusted the regulation gym uniform consisting of capri shorts and a polo that Stacy had given me in the pristine locker rooms. Rushing along with the flurry of terrified students I fell in line in front of the horrifying woman who could only be Ms. Xamen. Even though she was short, she clearly had muscles and the amount of makeup on her face was enough to make even a Kardashian upset. Pitch black hair was tied up in a tight bun, but not as tight as her pursed lips and clothing.
"Showtime ginger." Aiden whispered, patting my head as he passed me. Tyler followed quickly behind him, offering sympathy in his eyes, sympathy I didn't want or need. Because I could do this, and hell would freeze over before I would allow a bully like Aiden push me around.
"This will no doubt be your most hated class, so if you don't work hard, I will fail you and you will hate it even more!" There was a twisted joy in how Ms. Xamen said this, and as she ran through attendance by glaring at her clipboard and shouting out names, the whole list was gone through without my name being called. Taking a deep breath for luck, I took one giant step out of line and gave the terrifying woman my best glare.
"Excuuuse me Ms. Makeup but you didn't say my name, certainly there must be a mistake. " I made my tone sound as haughty as possible, and hated how I sounded. This wasn't me. But I needed my clothes.
"Well excuuuuse me Little Miss Priss but this roster comes directly from the headmistress and unless you want to take this up with her get back in line after you accept this detention slip." Snickers echoed throughout the gym, and I felt Aiden's victorious grin boring into the back of my head. This wasn't over yet. I had learned long ago that when you couldn't get out of a situation, you used your lies.
Walking up to Ms. Xamen, I gripped the detention notice in one hand and spoke quietly to her.
"Am I to take it that you are the ladies soccer coach the Headmistress told me about?" I was speaking total BS. I had no idea what I was talking about, but recognition dawned instantly in Ms. Xamen's eyes.
"Oh my goodness are you perhaps Jayda Werth?" It was amazing how quickly her personality changed. "I am so sorry Ms. I didn't know it was you, otherwise I wouldn't have been so rude! Please tell me you are considering joining our soccer team here, the headmistress told me you were a state champion!" Tilting my head as if I were thinking, I looked around the gym and locked eyes with Stacy, who gave me a thumbs up, and above her shoulder stood a dumbfounded Aiden. Winking at him, I turned back to Ms. Xamen and put regret in my voice as I responded.
"It would be my honor to join the soccer team here, Ma'am, but my parents explicitly said that If I got any sort of detention whatsoever, that I would not be allowed." Sighing dramatically, I clutched the pink detention slip tightly and shuffled off back to my place in line.
"Well since it is your first day sweetheart, I think this whole matter can be excused can't it?" Ms. Xamen was in front of me in a flash, and almost pleadingly looking up at me. Pretending to consider her offer, I smiled and offered her my almost-detention.
"Of course Ma'am, and thank you for allowing me to join your team." Ms. Xamen beamed and brought me in for a hug, causing me to almost retch at the overwhelming smell of her perfume. Behind me I heard Aiden's noise of disbelief, and flipped him off behind my back. Take that Kace. I thought smugly. That's one outfit back.
