Skating all thoughts of my scary encounter with Aiden, I quickly entered the office.
Headmistress Ryan was scarier than hell itself. My room at home was whirlwind of activity, I was never in it unless I was sleeping or quickly changing an outfit, so stuff was absolutely EVERYWHERE. This office put my filthy room to shame. A pressed, clean cream colored carpet covered the floor and a big oak colored desk sat in the middle. A giant window overlooked the campus, and although the continuous tap of well manicured fingers against the desk continued, I still examined the room. There were 3 chestnut cabinets spread out across the room, carved with intricate designs, one filled with a mini personal library, another with pictures of what I assumed were her family, and the third... Holy shit... I mean...
The third cabinet was filled with diplomas. How could one woman possibly earn that many?? There were at least 5, and that woman could have not been past late thirties. I heard a throat clear and guiltily turned to look at Headmistress Ryan. For an older woman, she was very pretty, but in a cold calculating way. Dark blonde hair in a short pixie cut framed a pale face with round green eyes. Her makeup looked like she had spent hours on it, but I suspected it had only taken her a few minutes.
"Sorry Ms. Ryan." I said as politely as I could. I needed to make a good impression. My parents needed to know I would be safe and happy. "It's just... Well my room at home could never hope to be as neat as this office." It was the truth, and I did an inner fist pump when her thin lips curved upwards just the tiniest bit.
"Well Ms. Jayda, While I am flattered by your compliment, I assure you it will get you nowhere. Keadon Prep is a school full of history and prestige. It's graduates got where they were through hard work and dedication, NOT brown nosing." It took all my willpower not to let my mouth fall open. Was this woman for real? I didn't think anyone even USED the term brown nosing anymore!
"Of course Miss. Ryan." Her face contorted into a displeased expression."Mrs. Ryan actually..." Oops. "But that sounds much too formal don't you think?" I nodded frantically. "Please refer to me as Headmistress or Headmistress Ryan." Yes. Because that didn't sound formal AT ALL.
"Now. Please have a seat, we have much to discuss." Grudgingly I took a seat in the uncomfortable leather chair, feeling like a mouse being lured into a field by an evil hawk. "Now Ms. Werth." I looked straight into her depthless eyes and felt cornered. "It says here you are a straight A student, with mentions of an allergy to peanuts as well as some issues with nerves. Am I correct?" I nodded, and then realized she was waiting for a verbal answer.
"Yes Ms... I mean Headmistress Ryan." She seemed pleased, and as she scanned her papers I nervously tucked a sand of hair around my ear.
"Your past principal has included mentions of you participating in both soccer and track, and that in your first three years of highschool you led them to states." This woman made me want to run screaming from the room. Her eyes bored not me, and I didn't realize I had taken too long in responding until she cleared her throat again.
"Sorry!" I squeaked out hastily. "Erm yes, we won states two of three years in both sports, but it really was a team effort." She scrutinized me, for the trillionth time, and I was getting ready to interrupt her when she finally decided to speak again.
"Do you participate in the intake of drugs or alcohol Jayda?"
"Of course not! I played sports remember?"
"Have you ever abused someone?"
"No!"
"Been abused?"
"What??? No!!" I couldn't believe the questions she was asking. Did I LOOK like I did any of those things?" Headmistress Ryan carefully arranged the papers on her desk and looked at me with an indiscernible expression on her face.
