CHAPTER 3
I was laying on the daybed in Doctor Barrett’s office, listening to him babble on about my progress. He was rather impressed about my calmness, though I knew I was calm due to all the medication they shoved down my throat. The darkness lurked inside my mind, leaving me at loss of memory. Often I would forget where I was, unable to distinguish my surroundings.
I hadn’t seen Sebastian in two days, which left me in a depressed state. I wanted to ask Doctor Barrett where he was, but no sound would leave my lips. I felt horrified, as though the darkness was sucking the life out of me. I was a walking zombie, left drifting in a motion of nothingness. Sebastian was the only radiance in my life, the only reason for me to keep fighting, but without him around, I…
“Miss Brandon? Are you listening to me?” asked Doctor Barrett, cocking his brow.
He seemed unpleased about my lack of attention, though I had no urge to cooperate. I was damned to spend the rest of my life in this prison; I couldn’t care about escaping anymore. Sebastian had abandoned me, left me to suffer alone.
“Where’s Sebastian?” I finally asked, staring blankly out of the imprisoned window.
It was a sunny day, a day which should be spent in the sun. Instead, I was trapped inside the darkness, the light so close, yet, so far away.
“He left.” said Doctor Barrett, bringing me back to reality.
I felt my heart skip a beat – one, two, and three beats.
A sigh escaped my lips, as I felt the uncomfortable feeling return in my chest. The beating of my heart seemed insignificant without Sebastian around. He had left me to die, to be consumed by the darkness, just as my family had. He had turned his back on me, the same way my mother had the day Doctor Barrett took me away from them. Anger pulsed through my veins, tears streaming down my pale cheek. My heartbeat accelerated, leaving me gasping for air.
“You…!” I shouted, pointing my finger in Doctor Barrett’s face. “You had taken everything from me; you brought this curse upon me.”
“Calm down Miss Brandon.” he said, his hands up in surrender. “Nurse, I need a little help in here.”
I stared at him blankly, pain filling my heart. He was afraid of me, he thought me a mental person. I sighed in resignation, falling back onto the daybed. Of course he thought me insane, the way I acted proved nothing except that. They would never believe me to be sane; I had lost the battle even before it had begun.
I couldn’t believe Sebastian had left me, leaving me in my own personal hell. The nurse rushed into Doctor Barrett’s office, eyes wide, and hands trembling. I ignored her entrance though; I knew the dark cell awaited me once again. But I would welcome the padded room; there I was able to drift further into the darkness. I would hide from the light, until Sebastian rescued me once again. But before the nurse reached me, a vision hit, which left me cringing on the ground.
