CHAPTER 11

Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and months turned into a year.

I had been waiting for Jasper for just a little over a year now, and yet there was no sign of him. I focused on him all of the time, and still the vision was the same. I was meeting Jasper in this diner.

There was no indication of a time or date, only the diner, an atrocious storm and him of course. But other than that, it was impossible for me to tell when he would appear.

I had gotten much better with my premonitions. At first they had been a little ambiguous, though I saw the Cullens visibly now. I was eager to meet up with them, fervent to start my life.

I despised sitting, waiting at the diner day after day, waiting for Jasper, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave. I would wait for him even if it took a decade.

The waiter, Jonathan, smiled censoriously at me as I entered the diner yet another time. He didn’t comprehend why I waited for Jasper, and I knew I couldn’t tell him the truth. It didn’t matter if he understood or not, because after I had found Jasper, I would never think of this human again.

“Back again?” he asked, as I took a seat at a tall stool at the counter.

I smiled at him without saying a word, feeling a bit queasy. It had been more than a week that I had hunted and I knew it made me crankier. My eyes were a shadowy shade of crimson, to the human eye, it would seem black. My throat throbbed in pain as I inhaled Jonathan’s engaging scent, and quickly, I stopped breathing.

I couldn’t kill a human. I would have to start hunting animals on a more regular basis. It was less appetizing, though it lessened the burning in my throat. Venom pooled into my mouth as Jonathan leaned on the counter, his breath blowing into my face. I gripped the side of the stool more firmly, clenching my teeth together.

Don’t kill him Alice, I thought to myself.

“If you’re friend doesn’t show up, you know, I’m always available.” he said, pouting his full pink lips.

My jaw dropped, literally, as he said those words. Did he honestly think, that I, a vampire would want him? He was human; he was my prey for god sake. But of course he didn’t know that, and I couldn’t blame him for saying such things.

Vampires had the uncanny ability to seduce humans. Everything about us lured them in, our faces, our voices, even our scents. They thought us God’s gift to mankind, where in fact, we were monsters – killers, as I once heard Edward Cullen say in a vision.

“He’ll be here.” I said through clenched teeth, furrowing my brow.

He shook his head in disbelief.
