CHAPTER 13 (EPILOGUE)
“Are you ready?”
I watched Jasper’s reaction to my question, feeling perturbed as our future with the Cullens blurred in and out of focus. He was making it exceptionally hard to anticipate their reactions, and I wondered – only for a split second – whether we were doing the right thing.
It wasn’t everyday a vampire appeared on your doorstep and demanded a place to live. Yes, I was going to demand as I saw no way of living as the Cullens do without the help of Doctor Carlisle Cullen.
But I knew, if Jasper decided not to join them, I would willingly follow him and become once again a nomad. I didn’t enjoy the nomad life much, and after two years of searching for the Cullen family, and to have finally found them, the thought of not joining them sent jabs of pain through my heart.
“I’m ready.” declared Jasper, though he was still weighing his options.
He made it very complex for me to see a good deal. I only got glimpses here and there, and I was relieved to see that Edward was not home.
He and Emmett had gone hunting, and I thought as a treat to Emmett, I would play a prank on Edward. I knew it was going to start a friendly rivalry between Edward and me.
Edward was competitive, and I knew, for the first time in his existence, he would meet his match with me. I wondered nonchalantly how his mind reading ability would compare to my premonitions, but he would have to decide for me to be able to see.
“Alice, are you sure this is safe?” asked Jasper.
His lips were pressed into a tight line, and his body was rigid. He didn’t like the idea of stepping into their lives blindly, but if he could only make up his mind, I knew I’d be able to see. But even blinded, I wasn’t afraid. I had learnt a lot about them through my visions, and one thing was certain – the Cullens weren’t unsympathetic.
“We’ll be fine.” I said earnestly.
I grabbed Jasper’s hand tightly within mine, and dragged him up the steps which led to the front door. He followed reluctantly, and I could sense he wanted nothing more than to flee. But I wasn’t going to allow him. We had been searching for too long to give up so effortlessly.
“I don’t know…”
“Jasper, we’ll be fine. Come on now, they won’t bite.”
He raised his brow at my statement, and I could do nothing but roll my eyes and let out a slight snicker. I was anxious to meet them, as they already had such a great impact on my life.
I reached for the knob of the front door, only to have it snatched away.
