So I know I gave zero warning but this is the last chapter. I could've split it up into two but I didn't want to. Hope you enjoyed reading and thank you so much!!!
Chapter 31:
I was in the dream world again but this time I had a body. I was sitting on a big lay-z-boy with the foot recliner out.
“You really need to stop getting yourself killed you know.”
I turned and my eyes connected with a pair of eerie gray ones. “Calypso,” I whispered, stunned.
“Oh good, you still remember me.”
I scowled. “Of course I do. Do you know how many nightmares I’ve had because of you?”
Her eyes flashed fire. “Some people consider me a very beautiful woman you know.”
“I’m not talking about your looks. I’m talking about your prophecies of death and your telepathically transmitted images of mine in particular.” I winced, remembering.
She shook her head at me. “I had to tell you, Cassandra. It was the only way that you would live.” She gave me a disapproving look. “Of course, you didn’t last long.”
“So I’m dead then?”
She tilted her head to the side and just looked at me. “Do you feel dead?”
“What kind of question is that?” I asked, incredulous.
She scowled at me. “It’s a question that your elder has asked you and you would do well to answer it kindly.”
I returned her scowl but decided it wasn’t worth the fight. I thought about it for a second. “I don’t really feel dead, no. I feel incredibly unconscious but if I think hard enough, I can almost hear their voices. It’s like there’s a screen between us and if I just break through it, I’ll be fine.”
She nodded, smiling at me. “Well then, there’s your answer. The choice is yours Cassandra. You planned to die before this fight, you were ready to do it and now you have a lot of extra power that you’re going to need to learn to control. The question is, do you want to?”
“Of course I want to live.”
“It’s not going to be easy.”
“It never is.”
“You’re not like most girls.”
“Are you trying to convince me to give up? Because I won’t, you know. I’m never giving up and I know that Angela genuinely loves James but she can’t have him, okay? Because I love him too!” I finished, shouting as I rose from my chair and started pacing through the mist.
She gave me a knowing smile. “Good.” There was tenderness in her eyes as she looked at me and I stopped pacing as I stood in front of her. She rose from her chair and placed a hand on my cheek. “Your mother asked me to tell you something.”
My forehead crinkled and my lips drew into a tighter line but I didn’t say anything.
“She asked me to tell you her name.”
I felt everything inside of me go still as I realized that of all the things I’d heard about my mother, not one of them had been her name. Somewhere inside of me, I hadn’t wanted to know it. Knowing her name would make her real, would make the things that she had done real.
“Her name was Miriam and she was a terrible person. She knows that, everyone knows that. She also wants you to go home.”
“What?” I frowned, confused. Miriam, her name was Miriam.
