The Crows

Some time in the night I was woken up by Alice who was rolling around, caught in the grips of a nightmare. Her powers where going haywire causing the rocks around us to float in the air.

I tried to shake her awake but the nightmare was too strong and she couldn't wake up. A loud crash came from behind me and I saw that our bikes were wrecked beyond repair. The crash woke up Alice and I groaned,” Jesus Alice you do know I hate walking right?”

She fell back and muttered,” Sorry.”

I sighed and laid back down," You are carrying me if I collapse."

She groaned and I laughed," Get some sleep." 

The next morning we had to trudge through the hot sand.” Definitely not the vacation I was imagining. Where were all the beaches and the beautiful blue ocean?” I thought.

The day got worse as I saw a murder of crows pass above us, they looked as if they were searching for the next thing to eat. No way was I going to be on the menu. We continued walking until we saw a motel appear before us, the hot wind billowed sand up into the air, obscuring my view for a second. When it cleared I could see people shooting at the crows, trying to escape the vicious birds.

A person was trying to burn them with a flamethrower but he was quickly overwhelmed. The flamethrower lost control and started burning everything in sight.

Two people were about to get burned when Alice used her powers to stop the flames. She controlled the flames to burn all the crows and missed one. It was heading towards the people when I whipped out my gun and shot it in the head. With a loud squawk it tumbled to the ground in a pile of feathers. My gunshot echoed around the area which became eerily silent. Only the wind could be heard as it blew sand around, I could even picture a tumbleweed blowing across the sand.

The air was so hot that I could literally see a wave of heat in front of me. I ran towards Alice who was kneeling on the ground, she must have be worn out by using too much of her power.

“Hey are you okay?” I asked concerned.

She clutched onto my arm tightly and said,” I’ll be fine, I just need to take a nap.” She murmured. 

She fainted and I quickly grabbed her before she could touch the ground. A hand rested on my shoulder and I looked up to see Carlos. I didn't think I would see him ever again. 

 I grinned,” I would love to hug you right now but Alice will probably fall on her face.”

“Good to see you again Amy.” He laughed.

Carlos helped me carry Alice into the motel and onto a couch as people started emerging from their vehicles. Someone ran at me from behind and I was pulled into a big bear hug. After that I was smacked in the head.

I clutched my head in pain and said," What the hell was that for?"

Rain growled," That's for ditching us."

“Thanks for saving our asses.” Carlos said trying to change the subject.

“That’s twice now Carlos, don’t get into the habit of counting on me.” I replied.

A redhead approached us and said,” Thanks for the help.”

“No problem.” I responded.

“I’m Amy.” I said holding out my hand.

“Claire.” She said shaking my hand.

“Do you guys know each other?” She asked looking at Carlos, Rain and I.

 “Yeah, we survived Raccoon City together.” Carlos said.

 “It was fun.” I joked earning a small smile from Carlos.

 “Will Alice be okay?” He asked.

 “Yeah she just used her powers too much, she just needs some rest now.”

 “Powers?” Claire asked.

 “Umbrella.” I responded not really wanting to relive some horrible memories. 

I explained who we were and how we got here. Claire introduced me to the others and one by one they came to thank me. I shrugged,” Alice did most of the work no need to thank me.”

An hour later I was leaning against the couch waiting for Alice to wake up. Rain was busy sharpening her knife and giving me these looks, I gulped a bit, I guess she was still pissed at me for leaving. I was busy cleaning my gun and talking to a girl named KMart. She was really nice and we talked about random things. She even gave Alice and I a bracelet. Alice was starting to stir and I spoke up,” Sleeping Beauty finally wakes up.”

 She smacked the back of my head and I said,”Ouch, more like the dragon lady.”

 KMart giggled and I smirked at her.

 “Alice meet KMart, KMart meet Alice.”

 Alice nodded at KMart and held up her hand with the bracelet on it. “Did you give this to me?”

 Kmart responded,” Yeah, I didn’t know how else I could thank you.”

 “Thanks.” Alice said.

She finally noticed Rain and stood up quickly almost toppling over, "Easy there tiger." I said.

Rain grabbed her arm to steady her and she pulled her into a hug. "What your not going to hit her in the head too?" I said earning a glare from the latina. 

“Come on stand up, you are going to want to see this.” I said wanting to put some distance between Rain and I.

I dragged Alice out of the building to look for Carlos. He was busy talking to Claire and didn’t see us sneak up behind him.

I whispered,” Boo,” into his ear and he whirled around.

 Alice grinned and hugged him. After their little reunion he asked,” Why did you guys leave us in Detroit?” Claire went off to run some errands leaving us to talk alone.

 “We had no choice.” I responded.

 “We were being tracked by Umbrella, we would have gotten all of you killed.” Alice finished.

 “So we had to leave, we broke into an Umbrella facility and hacked into their satellite trajectories and downloaded it.”

 “After that we stayed off the grid.” Alice said.

"It was the only way." I said looking at Rain who joined us.

Claire came back and said,” The whole convoy is scared, they don’t know what to do anymore, there used to be so many of us and now half of us are dead.”

 “They need some hope.” I stated sharing a look with Alice.

 Alice dug out the journal from her bag and handed it to Claire. She quickly scanned through the book and looked up at us,” Arcadia, is it really a safe haven?”

 “It has to be, it’s the only hope of our survival.” I said.

Claire called a group meeting and showed them the journal, we held a vote and everyone was willing to take the chance of going to Alaska.

 “We need to fuel up.” Claire said.

 “How’s the tank looking?” She said to a man in a cowboy hat.

 “It’s empty.” He responded.

 “We have to find a place to fuel up, we’ve hit all the small places and most of them are empty.”

 “Which means you need to hit a city.” Alice said pointing to the closest one on the map.

 “Anyone up for Vegas?” I responded.
