***"What took you so long? You literally live five minutes away!" Brittany exclaimed as she flung the front door of the two story house open, the sound of the heavy raindrops splattering down on the pavement overpowering her voice easily.
Her best friend, Taylor, shoved past her and into the foyer of the warm house, safely out of the cold rain. "Sorry, I was only in bed for the night." She replied sarcastically, ripping off her black hoodie and hanging it on the coat rack by the door. She shook her unnaturally colored red hair out, running her fingers through the damp locks a few times before looking around Brittany into the small hallway behind her that led to the kitchen and from there the living room. "So, what noise?"
Brittany shrugged, hugging herself. "It sounded like someone knocking, and then I heard banging, and now nothing. It stopped when I saw you coming around from the back."
"What?" Taylor frowned, following her down the hall and into the kitchen, hopping up onto the closest bar stool and folding her arms on the granite counter top.
"I saw you coming up on the little walkway from the woods out back from my bedroom window. The noise stopped right when you got here." She poured two glasses of lemonade, sliding one to her friend who was sitting with a puzzled look on her face.
"I didnt come from the woods."
"Really?" Brittany froze.
"Yeah. Why would I come from the woods? I live the opposite way." She noticed her friends panicked reaction and shrugged lightly. "Im sure it was just a shadow. Missys out back right? You probably just saw her."
"Missy is a five pound bulldog puppy. Im pretty sure her shadow wouldn't be as big as yours." Brittany rolled her eyes, sitting her glass down and pulling back the small curtains to peer out of the window over the sink into the backyard.
The backyard was extremely large with trees covering nearly every inch past about twenty feet, everything close to the house was well trimmed. The flower garden her mother spent tons of hours and money on was being pelted by rain droplets, the sagging roses giving Brittany an even worse feeling. A guest house resided a ways back into the woods, and even though the house was only one story it gave off quite a large shadow in the broken moonlight that was trying to shine through the black storm clouds.
"Didn't you say the other day that someone was moving into the guest house this weekend?" Taylor asked suddenly as the realization hit her.
"Yeah," Brittany shook her head, pulling the curtains closed and leaning against the counter, clutching her drink in her hands. "But he never showed up. Mom and dad said he could just be running late or something though."
"Maybe it was him you saw." Taylor shrugged.
"Why would he be walking through the woods this late at night in the pouring rain?" Brittany rolled her eyes and tugged her long sleeve, black sweater down to cover her hands, her fingers curling around the bottom of the sleeves to keep it in place.
"Maybe he needed something."
"If that were true, wouldn't he be here by-" A sharp knocking on the front door cut her sentence off immediately. Both girls gasped as a male voice called out, asking if anyone was in there.
