"Lock up when your done. " The short old man called to me as he pulled off his lab coat and hung it carelessly in his steel locker.
I nodded and waved to him as he walked out of the large silver door,"Goodnight Mr. Downing".
The labs always seemed slightly creepy at night, when your alone. I took a deep breath and looked over the charts of the previous project the interns had been working on. The light on the far right flickered violently, as always, but this time it actually went off.
Frowning, I walked in that direction to see if maybe I could jiggle the switch a few times to get it to come back on, but an odd noise behind me made me freeze. Turning slowly, I scanned the area and when I was sure nothing was there I laughed.
"I'm losing my mind." I laughed again as I walked back over to the corpse we'd been dissecting. I heard the noise again and looked around. I placed a shaky hand on my heart as I realized the noise was coming from on top of the table.
I looked down slowly at the corpse. "Are you?"
Screeching, I dropped the clip board and stumbled backwards, bumping roughly into the door. I watched in horror as the once dead man swung his legs off of the table and leaned up in one stiff movement . I felt around behind me, frantically searching for the door handle.
Not taking my eyes off the man, I backed out of the room just as he stood up. I turned and dashed down the long hall, flinching every time one of the lights I passed flickered off, ridding the area I just ran through of light. I ran as fast as I could reaching out my arms as the door to the parking garage came into view.
Too afraid to turn around, I slammed into the door and nearly fell to my knees. Bracing my self on the pole in front of the elevator momentarily, I scanned the lot for someone to help me. Sadly, I was alone.
I made a mad dash for my red Volkswagen, reaching it in seconds. I fumbled with the keys before jumping inside and slamming the door, finally looking behind me.
No one was there. No one had been following me, I was alone in the parking garage. I leaned my head back against the seat, panting. There's no way I imagined that, did i? I looked into the rearview mirror once again before turning the key in the ignition and flipping on the head lights, illuminating the figure in front of my car.
I screamed, slamming my foot on the gas and ramming straight into the man. A sickening thump rang out and I nearly fainted at the noise. I stopped the car instantly and slowly looked out the window.
I slapped a hand over my mouth at the sight of the man laying face down on the ground. I pulled on the door handle, having to try a few times to get it open, and stepped out slowly. My knees buckled and I crashed into the side of the car. I pulled myself up and held onto the side of the car,not trusting my legs. When I reached the body I peered around it trying to see the face. I moved slightly closer and emitted another scream, a wave of nausea sweeping through me.
"M-mr. Downing!?" I dropped to my knees, pushing him over on his back. I felt his neck gently to see if he had a pulse, he didn't.
"No, no, no!" I cried. I heard footsteps behind me and they sounded familiar. I froze, chest heaving, praying. "No." I whispered once more right before a cold, clammy hand gripped my hair, yanking my head back in attempt to make me look the corpse in the face. "Yes."
