"Wake up, Roza! We'll be late for our assignments. Wake up!" A sweet voice whispered in my ear.
"Mmmm.…. Just two minutes more." I said lazily, like a small child who doesn't want to wake up early and go to school.
"Roza," the voice sighed, "The remarks on our guardian files.…?" The voice whispered questioningly.
And that was enough to wake me up.
"What is the time?" I called frantically from the bathroom, trying to be ready in two minutes, like Lissa. A small part of my mind wondered - how the hell did I fall asleep last night?! I was nowhere near sleep. The last thing I remember is laughing!
"5. You still have some time," Dimitri said, totally relaxed.
When was the reporting time? Darn it! I should have paid attention. There goes Rose Hathaway again.
This made me even more frantic, ill at ease, but atlast I made it out of the bathroom.
We chattered on inconsequential things, on our way down, like Sparky's anger. Well, inconsequential for me. When I told him about the little prank I pulled on Lissa, he didn't seem too much pleased about it, but atleast he didn't look that disappointed.
When we reached Hans' office, he was already waiting for us, pacing back and forth.
"Hey Hans," I greeted as brightly as I can, knowing that rude behaviour will get me in more trouble than I already was.
He just nodded - no manners! He's mean - and said the obvious. "You are here to serve your detention. Belikov, you go with Greg," - he pointed to his office from where Gregory was coming - "and you, Hathaway, come with me."
I sighed. Hans gonna take revenge.
I bid goodbye to Dimitri and we started walking to the administrative building of The Court.
He led me through the ornate double doors and across the hallway. It was unfamiliar, sort of. Except for the time when I'd went in the archives section. But it was in the another building. Sort of AB (administrative building, okay?) part 2.
That means I'm here to play with some shitty papers. Ugh. Nothing aggressive. Like vigorous work for 10 hours a day. I would have taken that happily.
He led me to the far end of the hallway, to the room on the left.
We entered the room. And to no one's surprise, I was right.
The room had a desk at the right side of the room, the cupboards, fitted with great difficulty, were placed against the walls. But this didn't made me sulky.
The cupboards were filled with files, the desk was littered with files and the floor had more files scattered. Files, files, files.
Paperwork.
Uh-oh. Only if they knew that the outing wasn't my idea. But.… does it matter? Hans will never listen to me.
Atleast, this was not some crappy labour work like the last time.
"You just have to sort the files which are on the floor and arrange them in the cupboard," Hans said matter-of-factly.
I sighed in relief. Knowing me, I will do this in two days at maximum.
"Be careful about the papers. Don't tear them or anything. You have four hours today, then you can carry on guarding The Queen." He said, lingering in the room.... bidding for time?
With that he turned and flicked on the light. I gulped. The light made the room more pronounced, thus allowing me to see the files on the floor.…. And the cluster was fricking huge.
"And yeah, did I forgot to tell that you not only have to keep the files on proper racks, but also check the papers inside the file whether they are in the right file or not? Have fun." With that Hans left. I now understood why was he stalling.
Did I heard right?!
"What have I gotten myself into?" I whispered, the files now appearing larger-than-life to me.
Let's start the work, invincible Rose Hathaway. Sarcasm noted.
After an hour, I had my strategy ready, and the files all stacked against the desk neatly.
"Okay, let's do this!" I said while picking up the first file - which had a big P written on its back side; apparently all the people with surnames starting from P. Duh! - and checking the papers.NAME: Alyona Pelevin.
STATUS: Non royal Moroi.
OCCUPATION: Teacher in Russian Academy.
MAGIC ELEMENT: Water.
This is interesting! I surfed through the papers excitedly, realizing that this room was all stocked with information of Morois all over the world. And possibly dhampirs.
The rest of the paper read about Alyona's life, about her family, friends, job..... blah blah blah.
I loved this work so much that I looked through the files like an excited little child who got a new game and is trying to find new functions of it.…… And, I still was behaving like an silly child even when 4th hour was coming to an end. I reluctantly kept the P and K files aside; they were sorted out. I was about to get up, when I found a wrong paper in K file.....
NAME: Feodora Ivashkov.
STATUS: Royal Moroi.
OCCUPATION: Owns a cafe in London.
MAGIC ELEMENT: Spirit user.!!!!!!!
Another spirit user?! Oh my God!
I quickly took a picture of the paper and kept it in the I file. Then I got up and started towards the door when suddenly, the door opened and in came Hans.
"Done already?" He attempted a teasing tone, but the surprise was not well hidden. He was watching the neatly stacked files against the desk, all clean and prim. Clearly, he was surprised how did I manage to clean so much in just four hours?
"Yeah. Can I go now?" I pleaded, now desperately wanting to see Lissa and tell her about my discovery.
Hans turned to me, for once, mild respect for me in his eyes, instead of the I-am-superior-than-you crap. "Yeah. Off you go!"
I ran out of that room, leaving Hans behind, and made my way to where Lissa was - The Hospital.
