Darkness
That's all she felt, all she saw, all she knew.
Y/N felt numb all over, not knowing if she was moving or not. She writhed around in the bed that the Med-jacks had laid her on. The things she saw...the things she felt... It was like a nightmare. But it wasn't. The things she saw weren't from a nightmare.
It was a memory

~Memory~

"What's gonna happen to him", Y/N asked as she saw one of her friends being led out of the common room. She had gotten close to all the Gladers, even though she was told not to, she did. Dr Paige looked down at her little assistant, wondering why her question was laced with such concern.
"You know what will happen to him , Y/N... We have gone over this many times", was the Dr's reply, staring through the window that showed the common room. Y/N knew they had, but couldn't help but feel guilty as to what she was doing.
'They don't deserve this!'
But Y/N was forced to watch as one by one, month by month, her friends were placed into machines that would wipe their memories of all this happening. Then being placed into that wretched box that sent them to that hell hole!

Month after month, a boy was sent up to the Maze. It was horrible! She saw the boys who ran get stuck in the Maze at night, then be eaten by the monsters they called "Grievers". Her heart ached every time she saw one of her friends get eaten, hurt or depressed. Especially when it came to the boy she was assigned to. They gave him the name Newt, after Issac Newton, and he was the one who held everyone together, but was the one who was slowly falling apart. She saw him crying through the screen she saw him on. It hurt her so much that she burst into tears herself.

After that, the whole memory went fast. Blurred images went by, only showing one second of someone in pain. The last image was the worst, it was Newt screaming as he was trapped in some liquid-filled case.
She woke up.

~Reality~

Y/N woke with a gasp, she felt as if she was drowning, like when she woke up in the Box. She looked at herself, then at her surroundings, before releasing a breath she hadn't realised she was holding. She was OK, she was in the Med-jack hut, OK. Y/N saw she had a few bandages wrapped around her right leg. 'The one that got cut...', she remembered. Then she remembered last night and what had happened. 'Newt!'

The Greenie jumped out of the bed like a bloody kangaroo and ran outside, looking for the tall blonde boy. She was greeted by glorious sunshine, temporarily blinding her.
Y/N held her hands up to help her see, but she didn't need to when she heard that beautiful accent shout her name. "Y/N!", Newt shouted from where he stood near the Homestead. He couldn't believe it! She was finally awake! After a week of bloody waiting, she was back. He couldn't help but sprint to the H/C haired girl and lift her up into the air. Newt spun Y/N around and then put her down, suddenly pulling her into a huge bear hug. "You're OK...", the blonde boy said into the girls H/L hair, he breathed her in to make sure she was actually there.
"Of course I am, you shank!", Y/N replied sassily, "You can't get rid of me that easily". All Newt did was chuckle and hold her her tighter, as if she would disappear if he loosened his grip.

He eventually let her go, due to the rest of the boys  bombarding them both with hugs, questions and punches of "Well done". The Gladers sat the both of them down at the fire pit and gathered round, waiting for Newt and Y/N to start their story.
"Well come on! Tell us how the night was!", Colum just couldn't wait to hear what the two of them had to say, no one had ever survived a night in the Maze before. And with that, the Greenie and the Runner told their tale.

~Time Skip~

Y/N was just walking along one of the walls of the Glade when she spotted something on the wall a bit higher. It looked like some kind of lizard. Y/N cringed, she remembered that she never liked lizards, or any reptilian or amphibian for that matter. But she was curious as to what it actually was. She went closer to the animal to find four little letters, written in a bright but sickly green.
W. C. K. D
"What does that mean?",
Y/N asked herself. It was the same word that she remembered when she came up in the box. "What has it got to do with any of this?".
She was about walk away when suddenly the lizard turned to her, face on. It sat there for a couple of seconds before sprinting off along the wall, disappearing in the trees from the Deadheads. She realised she had been walking into the back corner of the Glade, in the back of the Deadheads. This place kind of scared her, knowing that there were plenty of graves not too far away from where she stood at the point of two walls.

She sat down for a while, thinking about the Glade, the maze, the other Gladers, the lizard thing, Newt... 'He saved me...', she thought happily, the thought of Newt alone made her happy. And after that dream from last night...
"Hey, Love", Y/N almost jumped out of her skin, not hearing Newt's footsteps crushing the leaves as he came over.
"My God, Newt! You scared me half to death!", the Greenie said, placing a hand over her racing heart. Newt only chuckled as he sat down next to her.
"So how are you feeling?", he asked, gazing off into the woods.
"Getting better... What about you?", Y/N asked back, looking down at her hands.
"Only a few scratches, I'll be fine".

A calming silence passed through the both of them as they took in this part of the Glade. "You know, I have never been to this part of the Glade before. Ever!", Newt thought out loud, realising that he actually hadn't. In all the time he had been there, he hadn't made time to check it out, it was rather pretty.
"Thank you for helping me back to the Glade, Newt",
Y/N spoke up out of the blue, causing the blonde to turn his head, to meet with those transfixing E/C eyes of hers.
"It is I who should be thanking you, Love", Newt argued, "You were the one with the idea. Without that idea, we would've been Griever food!". Y/N chuckled as Newt took her hand in his, "Thank you,
Y/N".

Their eyes were both locked together, both holding emotions beyond imagination. Y/N wondered if she should tell Newt about her dream/memory from last night. 'Na! I tell him later. This is too great of a moment to ruin', she thought happily. But, once again, the moment was ruined by Colum running into the picture, causing Newt and Y/N to let go of their hands and crawl away from each other.
"Hey guys! Alby wants you both back at the Homestead. I think it's for a Gathering", Colum quickly said, though he was very out of breath.
The two in question quickly jumped up and followed Colum back to the Homestead. "Hey, Newt",
Y/N quietly whispered to the blonde behind Colum's back. The boy leaned in to hear what the girl wanted to say. "Let's make that spot "Our spot" since, you know, we are friends... Right?".
Newt smiled brightly and nodded, whispering in her ear, "Definitely". That brought a huge smile to her face as they walked to the Homestead.

~Elsewhere~

"Y/N is smart, Janson", Dr Ava Paige had not expected this when she had sent her former assistant into the Maze. She was sent there because she disobeyed
W.I.C.K.E.D and became a threat. Y/N somehow had found out about their scheme and decided to feed information to Dr Paige's worst enemies: The Right Arm.

But now that she had sent her up there, Y/N was proving to be a worthy subject. She was giving off results far better than any of the other subjects, and she wasn't an original lab rat to begin with!
"Yes indeed, Dr. But the relationship between her and that 'Newt' boy...", Janson was also watching the screen, watching how his former apprentice was out-resulting all the other subjects, including Group B. He had watched as she had outsmarted the Griever and had kept going even though it seemed impossible. But her relationship between her and the boy concerned him. Would he ruin Y/N's results ,or his for that matter, if they kept up the thing they had? He didn't care if they were lovers before the Maze, W.C.K.D couldn't allow this to happen, not now...
"Their relationship is working to our advantage", the Dr responded with a slight smirk on her wrinkled face.
"But how...?", Janson questioned, wondering if the Dr had finally lost it. But all she said was, "You'll see, Janson. You'll see...".
