Your foot collided with a puddle gathered heinously in the centre of the dirt path. The impact caused a dampening splash to further douse the small spark of patience you retained. Today was set aside for visiting family members in town- though you missed them dearly during your days in training, you feared this poor weather may be taxing on your ability to withstand their incessant prying questions. Perhaps it was the reoccurrence of a particular question that named the occasion an ordeal:
'Is there a special someone in the military Y/n? Why haven't we met e'm yet?'
The rain began belting down even harder as you trudged aimlessly down the street, your uniform was soaked through rendering it far from modest. Wrongfully you assumed the streets deserted and decided to verbally vent your frustrations through a loud groan.
"Uggghhhhhh! Bugger this!" Only the mildest of many obscenities spiralling through your head were spoken as you struggled against the weight of your drenched backpack. Fatigue coupled with a stomach deprived of food for several hours soon overcame you. Your gait slowed to a snail's pace- had Shadis seen you now he probably would've kicked you out then and there. Perhaps it was the draining mentality that your one day off in months had wound up just as bad, if not worse than the day to day training. Albeit, a grumble from your stomach labelled it the primary cause. Just when you were tempted to succumb to the now soggy sandwich tempting you in your pack a voice called from above.
"Y/n?" The tone was familiar in a manner that made your heart leap. You cringed with e/c eyes obscured by rainfall at the figure staring from the safety of a second story window. With a gulp and false smile bought upon by embarrassment you returned the greeting.
"Hey, Jean...." You were overcome with unnecessary chagrin- he'd seen you in this state numerous times before. He rested his head against his palm, a single lock of light ash brown slipped free of his otherwise styled hair. He remained silent, studying your tired form from above before speaking again.
"Wait there."
He left his sentry of boredom and disappeared before opening the door to his home only a few meters away from you. You snuck a glance inside; it was simple though appeared warm and inviting . The aroma of something brewing within reduced the thought of a sandwich to grounds worthy of scorn. Your gaze once again landed on the male standing in the doorway, it rested on the sight of his amber eyes for a few seconds before gliding away to prevent a blush.
It was then that he dished out words you'd easily title heroic in this situation- "Come inside and wait out the rain." You were left wordless though didn't hesitate to take him up on the offer. You smiled and muttered a thankyou as he stepped aside allowing you to walk in.
The wooden door closed with a thud behind you as you stood within the walls of his home. A knit of brown hair rested atop the presence of a woman you assumed to be his mother working over a steaming pan of omelette. She turned to face you and immediately a wide grin followed by a flurry of questions was directed at her son and his company.
"Jean-boy who is this? Poor girl is freezing! Oooh don't tell me it's the girl you said you li-" she was cut off mid sentence by a surprise avowal from Jean.
"She's.... Y/n, my.. my girlfriend!" You stared wide eyed at him for moment, an involuntary gaping of your mouth present. He turned to face you whilst feigning a confident exposure of his perfect teeth. You were lost in the pools staring back at you, initially unaware of the silent message they relayed. You gave a willing, though confused nod as you agreed to play along.
"It's a pleasure to meet you... Mrs Kirstein," you shot her yet another smile despite thoughts of the truth playing over and over. Jean merely intervened with his mother's speech to prevent her from exposing an alleged girl he liked. Not that it was any secret to you; Mikasa was kind, strong and beautiful- every kid in the trainee squad knew he admired her. Still, his feeble attempt at covering it over with your presence continued to leave a swarm of butterflies within you.
